Protein Skimmer Recommendation

In the process of getting everything together and need to make a decision on a skimmer. Waiting for my ref/sump to get here so I'm not sure if I can go in sump or out.

Tank specs are 95 gallon wave tank with 35 gallon ref/sump. Will house both fish and corals.

I'd like to stay around 250 for the skimmer and maybe go with a needlewheel although I don't know if I'll need that since I have the sump.


Can you give me recommendations on external skimmers. If I had to guess of the size of the skimmer area ....

If it were my tank, I'd probably go with either an ASM or one of the coralife superneedle wheels, but I do believe there are far better skimmers out there. The coralife one just seems a little more reasonably priced for the reefer on a budget.

ASM is the one I've been researching .... seems like a lot of people hate coralife products

Well, my opinion on the coralife I bought....my seaclone did a better job. Granted this is out of the norm for this skimmer, but still, like the seaclone better. got more skimmate anyways. But it's an easy unit to operate and clean so not too shabby. Gets the job done anyways. As for the ASM's, I hear nothing but good things, plus there are plenty of mods available that people have done to improve performance. I do hear that the euroreefs are comparibly priced to the ASM's now, or I should say that the ASM's increase in price makes them more comparible to the Euroreefs.

looks like I may up my budget. The ref comes unassembled so I can make the return or fuge side a little smaller and go with a larger skimmer. I'm leaning towards a Euro-Reef 135


I take it this is large enought for 130 gallons of water volume or can I get buy with something smaller ?...

How about a Reef Octopus NW200 Look here www.octopusskimmer.com they were on sale for $179:00 Its an eight inch monster that is built like a tank. I run a fully modded ASM G3 and it will barely keep up with a stock NW 200. The sad thig is it cost almost a hundred bucks more.

My coralife works awesome since Ii got it dialed in right. I run dry foam, and the gunk in the cup is as black as coffee.

im a euro fan but the octo nw200 is hard to beat. for the size its probably one the best buys at the moment

I use a Euro Reef as well. I am satisfied with it's performance.

Deltec off of e-bay. cheap(ish) and they are all damm good skimmers. Plus your re-cycling. Now doesn't that make you feel better.
