Protein Skimmer Replacement Pump Suggestions

Recently, my pump to my Reef Octopus SRO-XP1000SSS Protein Skimmer went out on me. The warranty is still good, but it souds like its going to take weeks to get it fixed. Needless, to say I will not be buying another reef octopus product anytime soon.

Is it possible to run a different pump on a Reef Octopus SRO-XP1000SSS Protein Skimmer? I was thinking a red dragon pump or something similar.

Or would it just make more sense to buy a completely new proteing skimmer and sell my old reef octopus once its finally fixed?

The same thing happen to my SRO XP5000! Mine wasn't under warranty. I ended up buying a new pump (didn't know what was wrong with it and needed the skimmer running) I will be replacing the impeller for the old one and save as a back up. When all said and done, it will cost me 1/3 of what the entire skimmer would cost :/

I was debating about getting a new skimmer, but didn't have the money to dump on a new one this size!

If your going to get a red dragon or similar, I recommend just suck it up and get an identical octopus pump and save the other one as back up. depending on the specs on the other pumps, they wont be as efficient as the octopus spec'ed out for your skimmer.

If you do have the extra money, a new skimmer is nice :) I'm surprise it will take them that long to "repair" the pump. Tell them "GIVE ME A NEW ONE!!!"

Or you can be a nice guy and let him use one of your many skimmers while he waits for his new pump to arrive :)

the "red dragon" pump is an askoll 1500, which is WAY to much pump for a 1000sss body. it would look like a foam cannon lol.

I have a used pump for a 1000sss that I would sell. its the first model that the screws rusted. it worked fine when I pulled it off. been saving as a backup pump. not sure what its worth? LMK.

Thank you, I appreciate the response. It's gonna be awhile on the pump. They took a week to get back to me. Now I'm waiting to find out how long the impeller they are going to send me is back ordered. My current impeller is perfectly fine, but I guess that doesn't matter. So once I get the new impeller and the pump still doesn't work, I then have to send my pump in and wait for a replacement. I have a feeling it's gonna be a while.

Haha. There is no need for that, skareef is going to let me borrow his nwb110 for the time being. Thanks for the offer though, lol.

Did not know that, thanks for the heads up. I will get back to you about the pump if skareefs nwb110 does not work out. Thank you for the offer!

I would, but did you see where he lives? Plus dont hsve anything that would fit his needs...Haha ...an hr + drive one way:eek1:
I figure someone would offer to him

Ouch! Yeah, that is a far drive.

Rippinfrags, if for some reason you still need a skimmer I have a Euro Reef one that I can lend you for however long you need it. Not sure what model it is but from the size I would guess it would be good for a 200 gal.

Let me know.

if you were going to get an askoll, I would look @ SWC, they have a nice volute and pinwheel. IMHO its a 6" neck minimum for this pump as they pull about 90 scfh. :eek1:

here is a link if your interested.

also, if your dead set on not going with an oem pump, I would recommend a PSK 2500, or tunze hydrofoamer. here are links for them.

I really appreciate the offer azkass, but I am good for now.

SKAREEF is the MAN!!! Thanks a million for the practically brand new skimmer and the amazing piece of red gorgonian.. I was going to post a picture, but photo bucket is not cooperating. I will try again later.
