Protein skimmer?

I am looking at getting a protein skimmer I have a 40 gallon breeder and no sump. My question is, do HOB (hang on back) protein skimmers work at all? I know an in sump protein skimmer is best but I do not have a sump. Will an HOB skimmer help at all? Any input would be great!

I had a HOB skimmer for many years and it worked great. I certainly found value in it. The one thing that was kind of a pain was having the pump in my DT.

Thanks! What kind was it? I know they have a lot now and I'm thinking of the reef octopus! Do you have an in sump one now?

It was an aqua c remora pro. I don't even know if that brand is around anymore. I currently have a reef octopus in sump and love it. In my opinion reef octopus makes an excellent product.

Most HOB skimmers are horrible. I have read good things about the Aquamax HOB though. My first skimmer was a Red Sea HOB Berlin skimmer. Waste of money, but a pretty piece of shiny acrylic it was. Wish I could get the money back from that purchase and my rusting metal stand. If doing it again, I would look for a standard skimmer, put the pump in the water, build a shelf/table for the skimmer and have it return to the tank maybe using a hose and hose barb.

Anyway, good luck. My advice is most HOB skimmers are plain junk and not worth it. Get a sump.

HOB skimmers work fine.

Consider Eshoppes PSK-75 or a Reef Octopus HOB version. Both quiet brands and do the job well
