protein skimmer

i have had my tank set up for 1 week, and my protein skimmer running the whole time. How long do they usually take before they start to foam? Mine hasnt foamed yet. I have a D&D terminator II with a maxijet 400 pumping water into it.

New skimmers can take two or more weeks to "break in".

make sure there is something to skim first, does your tank have fish yet?

Like the last poster said...is there anything in you tank to skim? If you are just setting it up and have not added anything live yet, you may not get skimmate. When I first set up my skimmer on my established tank it still took a day or two. Make sure that you have the water level adjusted properly in your skimmer and give it some time. Also, if you are putting you hands down in the water alot, your skimmer may not function for hours after the fact.

yeah i have nothing in the tank except LR and my sand. I think i might leave it liek that for a few month just to see what kind of ecosystem develops.

Dont mean to hijack, but I think this is related. I have an asm mini-g in a newly set up aquarium. When I run the skimmer, It runs normal for a while, then seems to just stop producing foam for a minute or two, then starts up again. The skimmer is in sump. Is this normal in an early tank, or is this pump malfunction?

thats pretty normal in a new tank, especially with a low bio load what inhabitants do u have in the tank?

Just live rock and sand at the moment, I had just never heard of this happening, and wondering if I should return the skimmer lol. If its normal then Im fine with it.
