Protein Skimmer

Does a protein skimmer remover phosphate? I understand it removes waste, but is phosphate included on that list?

I had a massive outbreak of brown algae, and I would love to starve it.

Chaetomorph would be what you're looking for. A skimmer might help in removing nutrients, but the chaeto would more target what the problem algae needs for survival. That being said, if it's a new tank it could all just be a normal part of the cycle.

a protein skimmer removes organics before they break down or are utilized and become phosphates

so in effect a skimmer helps lower phosphate. unless you are adding pure phosphate in thru the RODI or feeding unrinsed frozen foods

E.T.S.S. claims downdraft skimmers remove more phospates then other designs. Not sure the principles behind that claim or if its even true. whatever the case phosphate sponge media (ferrous oxide) and macro algae are sure things.

getting a phosban reactor is a good idea figure out whats causing the outbreak in the first place is my advice.

i might be going out on a limb here but are u using faucet water... if so think about a ro/di unit i use a ro/di heck i cant get algae to grow i almost wish i could... lol

He is right the quickest and easiest is to use a reactor, but if it is out gets totally out of control, a water change and some blue life phosphate eliminator will help.
