Protein Skimmer

Hi im new here a friend told me about here and told me you guys are very knowledge able. Just one quick question im looking to get a new protein skimmer and was looking at the coral life 65 gallon protein skimmer but i have a 75 gallon tank would that work properly. Because the next size up is a 125 gallon skimmer and I dont think I need anything that big. Thanks for the response.

i would look into the asm line of skimmers they are monsters for the price! i had a asm g2 on my 125 with great success for awhile!

Funny you brought this up. I started my first reef tank 10 months ago and bought a Coralife 65 for my 55g. After my purchase, I started reading on here about how people have not had very good luck with them, overflowing issues, and simply not producing micro bubbles like it should.

Well, so far, all that I have read did in fact happen to me at one time or another. A couple months after it broke in and everything seemed settled in, it just decided to go into overdrive and it was overflowing water out the collection cup. Its only done this once, but that is quite enough.

Now for the past 5 days it has not produced any micro bubbles hardly at all so I bought 2 gallons of distilled vinegar and mixed it with hot water, put it in a 5 gallon bucket and let it run for 2 hours last night. Cleaned it all out real good and put it back on the tank. Before I went to bed last night it was producing waaay too many micro bubbles (which is normal when it gets upset) and had them all through the tank. This morning I woke up to find the skimmer not producing ANY bubbles.

So needless to say, I have not had very good luck with mine so far and will be on the market for another one. I think you will find a general concensus around here about this product.

And on top of all of that, I hear that it doesnt do a "great" job of skimming anyhow. I cant give you my opinion on it as far as performance because I've never used any other type of skimmer to compare it to, but it did produce nice skimate when it was dialed in correctly.

Good luck with your search.

I have both of these skimmers, coralife65 and asm g2. Asm g-2 would be much better on a 75 than the coralife. I'm actually trying to get rid of both of these, just waiting for a part for the asm. I am actually using an older, smaller euro-reef that uses the same pump as the g-2 but pulls much better skimmate than the larger asm. But I'd say the coralife 65 won't be good enough for the long run on a 75 gallon.

so you would say the euro reef would be the better choice then? Because I was actually looking at that one also. but i need one that hangs on the side of the sump because there isnt enough room in the sump to fit the skimmer so i have to have the skimmer hang on the side of the pump. Would it still work properly.

Most skimmers on the market are over rated. Meaning they will only do about half of waht the maker says.

The Coralife 65 is good for 40gal or less. You would need the 90 or 120

The Octo 800 is a good HOB

I switched to a Vertex. It has run great since i got the pump issue fixed. It sets up in 15 minutes and runs like a champ.

I think I need to add something I need a skimmer that hangs over the side to get it in my sump i have an pro clear aquatic wet/dry and it doesnt have any room where the sump sits to fit a skimmer http://cgi.ebay.com/Pro-Clear-Aquat...ilter-sys_W0QQitemZ220383760096QQcmdZViewItem thats the exact wet/dry I have if an admin looks at this im not tryin to sell this item idk whose item this is just trying to show a picture of the filter i have for help. thanks but yeah thats the filter i have and as you can see where the pump sits i would not be able to fit another pump in there for the skimmer any suggestions?

I wouldn't use a coralife as a hob. When I started I had one, and the thing always overflowed for no reason. I had it in sump, but hob would be big problems.
