Now, this may not work for everyone right off the bat. Following a few threads lately (including my own) and battling a protein (surface) slick for 6+ months...I finally solved the problem.
I switched out my overflows to Durso's sometime ago. Although not apparent until now that in conjunction with the tank water level caused the problem.
When I installed the Durso's I didn't want to hear any water gurgling sounds at all so I set the air intake cap to allow the water height to be even with the top of the overflow slats. Thought it was perfect. But come to find out because the water wasn't flowing or being sucked into the overflows protein was thus building up on the surface of the tank.
I tried everything over the last 6+ months to solve the problem. The other day I was having some sump water level issues and when I adjusted the air intake the overflow water level dropped and the slick instantly disappeared. Both standpipes now set the same. Hope this helps someone.
