pump for a 300 gallon reef

What my question is what size (gallon per hour) and brand to run.I have not yet ordered the tank so I can customize the overflows to meet the pump.

Sorry, I guess that's what I was getting at.
You know what dimensions your tank is going to be. Think about how much real estate you want to give up for the overflow. Use the calculator to find what GPH pump it could take. Then decide on brand/type.

For example, let's say you determine a 24x8 overflow will be acceptable (space-wise). That would be 40 linear inches of overflow, good for about 2650 GPH. Now you know what size pump you need.

I am looking for Info on good pumps. I have no experiance with larger pumps. So what I am getting at is what brand does everyone think is a good quality pump for the money. I am thinking between 2000-3000 gallons per hour

I can't really help there, sorry. The only brands I have experience with are Rio and Mag. Both are noisy.

I like to use Mag drives but the only draw back is heat added to the water. I would guess you could use 1 mag 36 on that tank depending on head length. I used 2 mag 24s on a 240 recently (FOWLR) and that tank is doing awesome. Just need some ball valves on the returns to slow em up a bit. On that tank we used 2 3-sided overflows with 3 1/2" bulkheads for drains. I also used 1 " returns in both overflows (one for each pump).

Gary, I have used the Dolphin Ampmaster 3000 for two years choked back to only run about 1500gph. These pumps are versatile and you can safely place a gate valve on it and control your flow. So, you do not have to be so precice with calculations, although you should try to get the best match from the start.

The magnetic style pumps can not handle this stress and should be run at full throttle.

During the two years I have removed it from service about three times for cleaning and had to replace the seal once because of leaking. The pump is very quiet and I have been very pl;eased with it. The Sequence pumps are comparible to the Dolphins, very popular and cost a bit less.

I am a Iwaki lover, never had one that big. I have 2 MD20RXLT's with the Jap. motor, one has been running continusly since 1985 on my 100 with no service whatsoever (15 Salt and 5 Fresh), just a tank move. I think they are quite if hung on a pltatform by wires to get the vibration out. The motor does get hot, but little if any will pass to water.
