what do i need to recharge my purigen and how do you do it?

I believe you soak it in RO water with a little bleach. I just read it the other day but don't remember the exact amount of bleach to use. I just ordered some from PetSolutions.com.

How did you like it? Did it work as advertised?

Regeneration: Soak in a 1:1 bleach:water solution for 24 hours in a non-metalic container in a well ventilated area and away from children. Rinse well, then soak for 8 hours with a solution containing 2 tablespoons of ChlorGuardâ"žÂ¢, Primeâ"žÂ¢, or equivalent dechlorinator per cup of water. Rinse well. For freshwater use, soak for 4 hours with a solution containing 1 tablespoon of buffer per cup of water (Discus Bufferâ"žÂ¢, Neutral Regulatorâ"žÂ¢, or Acid Bufferâ"žÂ¢). Original color and full activity should now be restored and Purigenâ"žÂ¢ is ready for reuse. Caution: some slime coat products may permanently foul Purigenâ"žÂ¢ and render regeneration difficult. Do not reuse if odor of chlorine is detectable. In case of doubt, soak beads in small quantity of water and test for residual chlorine with a chlorine test kit.

on the flip side how long does chemi pure last before having to be recharged or can it be recharged.

I 2nd colinadam. My tanks will always have Purigen and Chemi-Pure. They made a huge difference in my water quality. The small Purigen that comes pre-bagged is cheap enough to replace every 6mo if you dont want to mess with recharging it. Chemi-Pure is supposed to be good for 4 to 6 months in a 40Gal. I just replace it when I recharge my Purigen.I dont think you can recharge it.

Chemi Pure (which is primarily carbon) cannot e recharged. I'm also not sure I would give it a 4 to 6 month lifespan, as that time period will depend on what is in, or put into your tank. I change the bag (smallest size bag they make) every 8 weeks. I also agree with sperry that the 100 ml bags of Purigen (all you need for a 24g tank) are cheap enough to replace than deal with regenerating them. A 3 pack at F&S is about 16.00 and if you change it every 4 months, that's your entire cost per year. While I do watch out for color changes, I still change out every 12 weeks or so just to be safe. It also allows me to work out close to a fresh bag of either one each month.

I also run a sapphire skimmer and pull out enough brown slop that not even my dog will sniff at. Even with all that, I still maintain weekly 5g water changes on my 24 aquapod. For me, the carbon, purigen, and skimmer are all nice to have, but it doesn't relieve me, at least from still changing the water. I figure if I waste an extra $50.00 a year on the chemical filtration, it beats the cost of crashing my tank because I fell a few days late in changing out some water. Given how much money I've already sunk into this tank, it's worth the few extra bucks, even if I can't prove it has dramatically benefited my livestock.

Last time I tried to regen Purigen, I almost killed every plating montipora and RBTA in my tank. I followed the directions exactly, even used Prime at the recommended dosage but it wasn't enough as I had a major tank bleaching event. I will never..never try that again.

One thing I've noticed is that if you don't put a recharged Purigen packet right back in the tank, it quickly discolors. This even happened when I put it right into a small zip-lock bag. For that reason I just go ahead and replace them with new ones every few months.

Like most everybody else I think they do a great job. I consider them an insurance policy in case something goes sour in the tank between water tests.
