Anyone have any idea of what type of algae this is and what solutions there are for controlling it besides the phosphate filter route that I have in place now. I also have a purple, sailfin and naso tang that don't seem to take a whole lot of interest in it. It is purple/deep maroon red in color, grows in a spider web fashion and grows tight to the rocks like turf only sticking out about a quarter of an inch or so. Has no bubbles or slime like features.

Thanks

Its coralline algae and most people try to encourage it to grow in there tanks. It looks very attractive and does not impact on the reef, other than using up some of your calcium. If you have a lot of it and it is growing rapidly, well done. You can consider yourself lucky!

-I'm not sure this thread should be in advanced topics though-

Shoot, I think I know what you are talking about -- there was a big thread about the stuff. If you could get a better picture that would really help. But if it is what I think it may be, mexican turbo snails were the ones that ate it.

Thanks for all your replies. I will try and get a better picture. It isn't coraline. I do have a good growth of that or at least I did before this stuff grew and covered it up. It is turf like if it is hair algae it is really short in length.

LOL sorry - was looking at all of your coraline in the pic. It would be good if you can send a better pic of the other algae.
