PVC habitat for jawfish

This is just my initial idea... Not even sure I will pursue a jawfish for our reef but if we do looking for input. Sand bed is about 2-3 inches deep and will cover the pvc fittings. Just looking to make him a secure home... This is probably be overkill but we are a minimum of two weeks out from purchasing. Thanks in advance.

Depending on the size of the jawfish, I'd make that a bit bigger, and add in a few more entrances for them to be fascinated by. If you can give them 3-4 holes per "burrow", it'll be just like playing whack-a-mole without the whack part, you'll never know where the jawfish will pop up next! I'd also make the "cave" a bit bigger for the jawfish.

Keeping a screen on the top of the aquarium for a while after the addition I hope?
Jawfish are really susceptible to being carpet surfers.

Housing wise, looks like your new jawfish is going to be spoiled, lol, you did all the excavation for it already!

Yeah is a 1.5 inch tube with 3/4 tee. 3/4 of an inche opening seemed to be the recommended size for an average jawfish.

My Bluespot would never be happy with a PVC setup. He has connecting tunnels under my liverock with one hole used as a entrance, the other two he uses as hanging out waiting for food holes. Go buy several pounds of small light weight rubble so they can build there own home. Make sure all your liverock sits on the glass and is very stable, they will tunnel under it. For Yellow Head Jawfish Caribsea Super Reef work great

Having had a few Jawfish and having a Chinstrap Jawfish now, My guess is he is going to dig a tunnel right next to the pvc.

So my live rock is an elevated rock platform. I have a plenty of rubble.. not sure if this type of setup with a 3 inch sand we will support a jawfish.

There was an article in Corals and Reefs 2013 annual issue (I think) detailing a burrow similar to yours. Except it didn't have a central "cave" like your design has. If you've already built it, then why not just see if it suits the jawfish or not?

It started out less than 3", but after a year he has built up parts to 4". Whether it is Blues spots or Yellowheads they continue to build or change all day long other than when my BSJF is just hanging out watching me at work

The way I wrote my last post it sounded like KP Aquatics has BSJF, sorry they only have Yellow Heads. But which ever you go with the smaller the better. I attached a picture of my wife's pair of YH. FYI only the Florida strain have the yellow heads, the rest are normally Pearlys

I don't think they use prefab pvc condos in the wild! :lol: :lol:

If you were trying to provide a cave hole in a bare tank like a QT your creation might be worth a try.
