QTing, meds, and tank Qs??

hehe, yea hows my form, correcting someone on english, aaahahahahahaaaaa.

After a few learning, very expensive, ways on how to not mix syngnathids, I do truly believe that I have a handle on it, like, how many times can you kill 7 dragons without learning. Once. A couple of lost horse tanks, and now, nary a prob.

It is a big ask, lots n lots of time, big water volumes, lots in reserve, big UV, can be done, but not by many.

This is not putting anyone down, just that its something that has to be followed thru, you cannot skip, nor should you start if you do not have what amounts to far more than most hobbyists have at home.

well just whanted to say things have not gone well with the SHs, i put the one with finrot in a 2.5g and dosed with furan 2 for afew days, then i ran out of salt sence we got snowed in so i had to put him back with the other SHs:(, then the other larger one got fin rot, finaly got out to get some salt and thought i would just dose them all with furan 2 this time to be safe, added it to the tank along with a bit of prazi pro, and the sickest one died:(,

other larger one hasent been well its just swimming at the top of tank with its tailed curled up, but the smallest one seems fine? not eating but ackting OK,

when i was doing a WC i found some strange things in the tank, i seen many things in my tanks and know what they are but these are diffrent, there white and flat and move like a slug? i saw a pic on here some ware that looks like them a wile ago and it said they were flukes, but i thought flukes were small and hard to see? these are small but i can see them cleerly, i tried takeing a pic but my camera cant focus on them, but the SHs do kind of act like they have flukes and mabie the flukes are causeing the "fin rot"but the prazi pro hasent killed them so?

and i still havent gotten down to get brine shrimp and i dout i will be, the last thing i have thought of if these two survive the furan 2 treatment is i was reading on david123s seahorse/pipefish board about force feeding with a suringe and cathider with a bit of food with meds? but onone will help with this as they all think its to cruel/tramatizing on the SH? David123 can you please tell me if you have don this before how well it worked?

How long has it been since the seahorses have eaten? If its been too long, eventually force feeding isn't going to do any good. That being said, force feeding can definitely be a way to get nutrition to the seahorse until they are strong enough to eat on their own, and many seahorses have bounced back from force feeding to lead full healthy lives afterward.

its been afew days but the larger one isent looking too good,
also i whant to add the prazi pro and metro to the food wile force feeding so they are getting fed and dewormed at the same time, iam thinking of stopping the furan 2 treatment sence it seems to be whats causeing the larger ones problems it was eating a bit before i started the treatment,
on force feeding the SHs it said to use a cathader, is there any other tube like mabie IV tubeing i can use? the only cathaders i can find come with a needle and what looks a pump or something? there $20+ each and it says one time use only dose that apply to what iam useing them for? i think i read someware to weigh the SH and then give the medication by how many grams they are? i saved the dead SH(i dont know why)sence hes the same size as the other one would trying to weigh him help to deterime how much medication to give the other one?

You can get a cannula from Seahorse Source http://www.seahorsesource.com/cgi-bin/shop/detail.cgi?id=300115 you'll want to get a syringe too.

Here is a thread about force feeding http://forum.seahorse.org/index.php?showtopic=10975&st=0&p=92298&hl=force feeding&#entry92298

Its not a good idea to stop the Furan-2 before 10 days is up. That can cause antibiotic-resistant strains of bacteria (the fact that you already stopped once could be a problem). Provided that you are following my instructions on the Furan-2, and that you are doing daily 50% water changes and using ammonia blockers as needed to keep up water quality, and you have plenty of airation; the treatment shouldn't be an issue for him.

You'll need to start force feeding at about 4 days without food. Beyond that point, their digestive system can shut down, and may not recover even if they begin eating again.

For the praziquantel and metronidazole, if you want to put that in their gruel for tube feeding, only use one medication at a time, not both. I'd start with the praziquantel. Put 3 or 4 drops of praziquantel in the force feeding gruel. Make sure when you are force feeding that you get the catheter/cannula behind the gills and go slowly. You should only force feed about half a mL at a time.

well i added some carbon to the tank the other day and it took out the furan 2, i dident know it was bad to stop the treatment but they did start to eat after that, i dident know you ment to change 50% of the water even though the tank has a good size power filter and some live macro algea i thought that would be enought filteration, the fin rot on the one isent that bad, not like the one that died so iam going to try and deel with the parasites first, then i will try the furan again, and do daily WCs

they are both acting better today but the smaller has gone from bright yellow to almost white but still active

the cannula in the link is it like a metal needle or is it plastic? i got afew different syringes right now and afew diffrent sizes of the needles that go on them, i have one more place to try to get a cathader if not i will order the cannula, also just to make sure the praziquantel is prazi pro so i thinks its quite dilluted in water in the botttle if that makes a diffrence in doseing

thanks a lot for your help ann83
