Question about base/dry rock

I need to know, if I take some rock that used to be live and put it in my tank, will this cause problems? It has been sitting dry for a couple of months now.
Algea?
Parameters?
Anything that will have a negative affect on my fish or corals?
Sorry if this is a stupid question.
Thanks.

Yes it will have dead stuff all over it and create a mini cycle as all the dead material acts just like a fish dieing. It will need to be cured, put it ina bucket wityh water and circulation of some kind. do water changes every week or so untill it goes thorugh the cycyle and the water starts to test correct, no ammonia will be your first clue. Be warned it will most likely stink pretty bad while doing this. Also if you ahve a skimmer you can drop into the bucket with it it will speed the process up a bit. Do a search on cureing live rock and you should find all kinds of info. Another mehtod I use is to drop the rock into a bucket with a good amount of bleach mixed into some fresh water.. After a week or two of soaking I dump the water, let the rock dry then resoak it for a week in freshw2ater with amquel or some other chlorine remover. Then rinse and put it in the tank, you will have completely base rock at that point, but if the stuff has been dry for a month you most likely already have base rock now so you wont loos any life.

I've read people cure small amounts of rock with some luck by putting it in the back tank of the toilet and\or unused bathtubs. It was bured in that diy base rock thread in the diy forum

that'd be my ghetto lazy way but you sure wouldn't wanna use something like 2000 flushes with it :)

I would suggest what brian said as well, throw it in a bucket with water and a powerhead or something keep changing water till it doesn't stink, when the smell is no longer something to brag about to your neighbor its cured and good for use.

OK, the rock has been in a tub, with lights and four 1200 maxi jets for about 3 weeks.
I never had any smell from it, at least not to speak of. My water tests good.
Is this ready to go into my tank? Or has the smell not started yet?

sounds good to me, any die off would have caused a cycle by now, ever get any ammonia or other bad params in the 3 weeks?

Other than my salinity jumping a little bit, due to evaporation from being in my garage, everything tested good. I had a slight trace of ammonia, but only right at first.
