Question about crushed coral

I have a question, excuse me if this is kinda a ridiculous one.

My sandbed get blown around and holes made by a couple of my tomato clowns who like to wave their tail quickly and it makes holes and piles up the sand and I have to go around and smooth it back out once a week.

My question, I wanted to add an inch or so of crushed coral to prevent this from happening. 1. Do you think the heavier crushed coral would prevent this? 2. Can I just add crushed coral directly to an established tank without any issues occuring? If yes, suggestions on type/brand.

Any opinions / suggestions / advice appreciated. Thanks for your help.

Yes you can add the crushed coral without any concerns. The only issue with crushed coral is that its larger size traps detritus and leads to higher nitrates in the tank. For a small area it would be of minimal concern, but most tanks that have a lot of crushed coral end up with nitrate issues.

I can verify this with my own experience. I am not sure what is it about crushed coral but it seems to be harder to vacuum and makes the skimmer less efficient.

It sounds to me like your clownfish might be getting ready to spawn, if they haven't already. I really don't think adding CC is going to solve this problem. Moving sand around is just part of the process IME. GL.

If your going to add it as an addition you shouldn't see an elivaton in nitrates. As the fine sand will fill the voids associated with crushed coral. IMO you should be fine. Good luck
