I bought my new flame angel (last friday) from the the reef shop thats closed today and i just found him dead on the bottom of my tank with my crabs having feast of him. does anybody know if they have a warenty on their fish and if i will need the dead one for it? help please.

T.

Most saltwater stores don't warranty their fish. The only one I know of that gives a warranty is Live Aquaria online.

It seem to be doing well/ i think it eat when i feed my clowns on sat. but it was kinda hard to see it was hiding behind some rocks. i was just fixing to feed them again when i found it dead. was wondering if my crabs could have got it.

did you acclimate? one tip is to have them feed the fish before you buy it, if it won't eat don't buy it!!

Ok my fish was in my tank for close to 72 hours and seemed to be doing fine. are there any ideas as why he died so suddenly? anything i should look for. my clowns look to be doing fine.

I also usually ask how long the fish has been there as well as taking a good long look at their appearance and behavior.

Is the fish social or hiding,

Are the colors vibrant or washed,

Does the fish have a full body. Fat stores in the head area are a good indicator of if the fish has been without food for too long.

Are it's eyes clear.

Don't worry experience will come.

I'm sorry you lost a fish. It happens to everyone. You may never have a good explanation as to why the fish died. Something could have happened and stressed it on the way to the store. I don't think your crabs killed it, they are likely just taking advantage of an easy meal. That's what they do.

I bought a pair of clowns a few weeks back from the Reef Shop. I acclimated both together the same way. 1 made it, the other didn't. I was going to take the clown back and some water for them to test, but unfortunately there wasn't anything left of him after the hermits got to him.

I now have a pink spotted goby from Tanks Alot, and it is doing great so far. Even though the worker dropped the bag on the floor with the fish in it. I made sure to get a 2 week refund policy after that before I left lol.

ty all for the help but it would seem that i am to blame for the demise of my pretty fish. I was keeping my tank to warm, i will not say what it was at but after about 40 min conversation with the guy at reef shop we came to that conclusion once he found out what temp. my tank has been staying at. need less to say i have turned off my heater and will be raising my lights higher off the tank shortly. chalk this up to being new to the hobby.

PS where is Tanks Alot??

Check your water quality. Also, look into setting up a quarantine tank since it will make it much easier to keep an eye on new additions to the tank in a smaller amount of space and to avoid spreading something that a newcomer might be carrying.

How hot was it?

My question, too. How hot was your tank and what were you using to measure the temp?

Those black and gray digital thermometers are notoriously inaccurate. The little floating mercury ones are better, just impossible to read...

I echo the advice - get your water stable before adding more fish. You might think about investing in good test kits for Ammonia, Nitrite and Nitrates. The first two should read zero, 0, nada before adding fish...

JMHO.

Tanks Alot is at 12142 W. Reno in Yukon.

yeah i really do need to buy test kits but here are the results as of yesterday

Nitrate 12.5
Nitrite 0
Ammonia 0
Calium 480
PH 8.0 (i know this is a little low but i didn't dose anything till i got my water tested after he died)
Salinity 1.023 (again didn't top off tank till after water tested)
Alkalinity 14
Phosphate .5

i have pretty much weekly test results from the time i set this tank up and they are all pretty much the same as the above ones give or take a little.

ok i would like to know what temp. others keep their tanks at. and if any of you have any of the folowing fish.

clown fish
royal grama
Yellow Coris Wrasse.
blue royal tang
flame angel
6 line warasse

Thanks
Tom

Summer time mine stays at 79-80.5. In the winter its a steady 79.

100 degree days the temp can swing to 81 or 82, but I got a clip on fan that brings the temp back down.

If you do use a fan, remember that the water will evaporate faster, and you will have to top off the water more often.

Also remember salt does not evaporate.

78.7-81.8 avg temp I have the following fish

6 line wrasse
bicolor blennie
Kole Tang
Majestic angel
serpent star

I would do a water change and try to get your nitrates to 0 not saying that was it, just you really want as little as possible. Your ph and alk are very closely related have you checked your magneseum? It should be around 1300ppm and will help with your ph and alk ballance. I was having issues with low ph and high alk untill I got a good test kit and got my mag up where it should be. just a thought.

If you are having your water tests done at LFS, the results are only as good as the technician doing the tests... nuf said.

Definitely buy your own kits...and test your own water. You are more conscientious about your tank than any LFS employee...

I have all of the fish on your list except for the flame angel. I keep my tanks between 78 and 81 degrees.

ok i am really confused now. i have been told that i should keep my tank at 75 deg. +/- 3 deg. is this correct? Ok i was keeping my tank 80.1 to 80.4 deg. now i really don't understand why he died? i took the heater out of my tank and now it ranges from 74.7 lights off to 77.8 with all the lights on. now i don't know if i want to bring home the blue tang that i have waiting on me at another LFS. i think someone with more time in the hobby should come have a look at my tank.
