If you mean the toadstool on the right.. they periodically will close up for a few days every now and then to "shed" some skin when they go through growth spurts.

You might notice the top layer lifting off or being something you can dust off with a turkey baster.. Looks like thats all thats happening to me. Just make sure it gets decent flow to facilitate the molt.

Does he touch the glass when he opens up? If I place mine close to the glass and he touches it while opening up he freaks out and looks like death.

What are your parameters like? It could be reacting to heavy nitrates due to overstocking. I count 9 fish in your second pic alone, which is more than double the max load that tank should have.

parameters are normal i guess he might be growing like chrisstie said...Just hope he comes back my clowns miss him being out..

If parameters are all good you should be fine.
We moved a few months ago and in the process it had a dime size hole open up near the top of the stalk.
It closed up for a few weeks while it healed and then opened up good as new.
Every couple weeks it closes up then kinda has a growth spurt.
So at least in my experience it's normal.

I have a giant green polyp toadstool in my tank at home and it does this regularly...sometimes several times a week. It is usually due to growth and sloughing off that top layer like Christy said. My guess is this is most likely what's happening. Another possibility, although not seen often, is a Benthic Ctenophore, also sometimes called a comb jelly. Here's a great link that explains these a bit more:

Mine have done that intermittently for years... I freaked out the first time, but since then, just figure the leather is pouting for some reason or another.

As long as it isn't disintigrating, it will perk up in time. (Don't ask how long - it's up to the leather.)
