So am I understanding right from todays post that if you have bought voortechs awhile back but didn't get in on the sold out first sell of the upgrades that you will have to pay $75 for upgrade instead of the $100 with a rebate of $50? If this is so why the sudden change as I remember ecotech stating that you would still get the discount on the second batch that comes for sell. And if you have to pay $75 do you get to keep the original driver or do you have to return it also? If I read this wrong than my bad just wanted a clarification of today's post.

From what I read if you get saddled with the $75 upgrade then you get to keep the old driver. This may actually work in our favor as we would then have spare drivers in case anything went wrong with the wireless ones.

For those of us with multiple Vortecs that comes out to a decent amount more $$. For us in particular that will end up costing $100 more (for our 4 drivers). But I also look at it this way, hopefully EcoTech will start supplying the wireless drivers to multiple vendors so that we are not all stuck going to that one rather high priced shipper, so that alone could mitigate $25 or more from the deal (for the multiple drivers). Our preferred vendor is Marine Depot, which has great shipping rates. I thought I read that some with 2 or 3 drivers for swapout were paying $50 or more for shipping. From MD 3 drivers would come with free shipping. :).

So looking at the bigger picture, even for mutiple drivers, it could only end up costing us an additional $10 or so per driver (over the first batch swapout), and with that we keep to keep the original driver for backup. Fair price to pay I think.

I got three I need so it is a $75 upcharge but like you said hopefully the shipping charges won't be so exaggerated to help offset some of that and if you can keep your old drivers than that would make a little more sense. I do have to say though I am disappointed in how this all was handled especially with people who haven't even bought the vortechs ordering the upgrades and getting the better deals than those of us who bought them earlier and have been waiting for the drivers and missed out on them. Where is the reward for trying out the product first. I could of waited for the second run but now it seems like we are getting penalized for not getting on the first run when it lasted all of two or three days before sold out.

For people who ordered an upgrade and did NOT own a pump they did NOT get a better deal! They paid $100 for the upgrade but do NOT have a serviceable driver to send in for the $50.00 rebate. So the upgrade cost them $100. The ones with a pump that got in on the preorder will end up paying $50 after rebate and all others will end up paying $75 but get to keep the old driver as a back up.

that is not entirely true about the ones who bought the upgrade without first owning the pump. Most all of those also ordered the pump from another (or even the same) online vendor right after they got in on the wireless driver deal. I mean come on, who in their right mind would buy the driver and NOT at least plan to order the pump ?!?!?!, that just makes no sense. What Joel is saying is that those people were not early adopters, they didn't "take a chance" on Vortec, they got the "Full Product" right out of the gate where as alot of us did adopt the Vortec line earlier on and didn't feel like we were rewarded for that "faith" and "loyalty", but rather were penalized. But as I posted above I feel that it will actually work out in our favor, so I am not that worried about it :)

Thanks Tom that is exactly what I was trying to say. I will take a wait and see attitude about this for now but just wanted to express a legitimate disappointment as I am sure others have to as to how it was handled. If you get to keep the drivers that will make it a lot better as then you would have a backup for $25 in case of emergency so that could make it worth it.

I think it is well worth the extra 25.00 to have an extra driver. If they were not of some value, EchoTech marine would not have been looking to get them back with a swap.

Any chance those of us that got in on the first preorder can opt to keep our driver and only pay $75 instead of $100? Would be nice to have the backup for $25.

I think I paid $35 for shipping 3 WWD's and I live 90 minutes from their door. They lowered the price of shipping the next day, I questioned about a partial refund to people that already paid the high shipping charge and they never got back to me. Hopefully their shipping is faster than their email response. :)

On the other end of this, I would be willing to buy a few spare drivers for $25 and pay shipping from those who did not get in on the preorder.

Hey Mike,

As both AS and EcoTech have offered to refund fully those currently waiting for the current wireless driver to ship, I don't see any reason why not? You'll just have to wait a bit longer. The upside is that you'll probably be able to use the club discounts to save 5-10% at the on-line vendors who sponsor our local fish clubs.

Thay actually did answer, it was just kind of cryptic. It was something to the effect that people who bought 3 or more would get more than $50 credited back when they sent the drivers back.

Vortech upgrade shipping charges...
Orders have gone through with higher than normal shipping charges to cover the return process, paperwork, merchant fees associated with the refunds and many hours that we will spend working on this upgrade program. This is going to be time consuming. We are covering our cost on this program and we saw this as a unique opportunity to promote Ecotech Marine and Aquarium Specialty. Aquarium Specialty is very pleased to be the Ecotech Marine partner in this upgrade opportunity and our hope is that our service and the products performance will exceed your expectations.

NOTE: A few of the purchases (those who purchased 3 or more upgrades at one time) will have a higher than $50.00 refund (per driver). Once the new drivers arrive we will ship them to each of you (Sept 1st). Once we receive back the old drivers your account will be credited. For further detail view the driver upgrade on our site and read the detail that we posted 2 days ago.

If you read the above info and the link (below) and you still have questions then post questions here or in the Ecotech forum.

Thank you and we look forward to working with you!

I like the idea of holding onto the old driver (definitely worth the $25) as there may be bugs or kinks to be worked out in the new one.

I share the sentiment with those that are disappointed on how this was handled. I was under the impression that those with warranty cards would be automatically notified. Imagine my surprise when I found out the first batch was already sold out.

Yeah.. very dissapointed in all of this... I have spent a lot of time having all 3 of my units worked on, (some 2-3 times), and STILL suggested them to people based on the strongest attribute of all: the customer service.

This fiasco w/ the drivers kills the quality of that custumer service.

Too bad ecotech didn't use Marine depot or premium aquatics. Both have great shipping rates. Even if it costs 10 bucks more, that is 2 trips to the driving range :).

I think it was explained earlier. I don't think AS is making much or anything off this exchange deal that's why the shipping was high as it includes a handling fee.

I don't know about you but I don't run a charity organization and I wouldn't expect anyone else to. Even people who run charity organizations get paid.

true, but i would have rather paid the extra money and then some as part of the upgrade than have an extra fee 'hidden' in shipping and handling. that just comes across as dirty and underhanded to me. and really, as for their time and effort they realized and even said that it was a huge PR opportunity for them. they couldn't have paid for the kind of advertising this gave them, or rather would have given them if they hadn't cheesed off so many people. their shut up and take it or leave it comment in their forum was incredibly offensive and totally out of line.

plus, i'm sure most people got other stuff too. i had a pair of upgrades in my shopping cart within hours of the announcement. along with an oceansmotion, a 400w icecap, radium and at least 75 bucks worth of other little stuff. sure it wasn't a BK or $$$$ lighting fixture, but still at least some profit for them. and more importantly it was stuff i would have normally gotten from my regular store (PA) just because that's where i always get stuff. a good experience could have won me over and converted me to use AS as my regular store. but after seeing the shipping and also charges other people quoted i said screw it. then the next day i thought more about it and decided that i wanted to make sure i got in on the first batch (i barely missed the first round of pumps and didn't want to repeat that), plus they dropped the shipping a little so i went ahead and ordered the upgrades. but without the bulk of the other stuff.
