Although this has been covered a lot lately, I am still iffy about using the rubble I got from the beach.

Now I didn't want to use bleach the rocks b/c of possible contamination with the tank and we all know how much we love our tanks! Who knows what could have been absorbed into the rocks considering that it was collected by the shoreline.

So this is what I did...

1) cleaned the rocks with tap water 2 times - let it dry in the sun
2) cleaned it with ro/di water once - let it dry in the sun
3) now it is soaking in a bucket with old SW I am using from my waterchanges.

Its been 2 weeks already and I have used 2 pieces of rubble. Everything seems fine, they are getting covered with coraline algae pretty nicely. Quicker then my other LR that have been in the tank.

Now I just wanted to know should I just keep the rubble in the bucket for a longer amount of time or can I add them into my tank?

Eric ive taken rocks straight out of the bay and ocean before and just put them in my sump and looked for bad algaes and parasites, sometimes treat them with a lil paraguard just in case but ive never ever introduced anything bad into my tank from it, i even take rocks with bits of stuff growing on em before with no ill effects....
Maybe i will get unlucky some day but ive been doing it for a year so far off and on.

Taking rock fom any saltwater area in Florida is illegal. This could be used against you someday.

Does this only apply to rocks in the water? What about stuff washed far up on shore after hurricanes? That will never see water again?

It was my understanding that with a permit and as long as you are not in a protected area it is legal. I doubt they will use it against me esp. were i get it from lol

they very well might use it against you,

florida fish and game as well as us fish and wildlife service all monitor local stores and public hobbyest activities and issue fines on a regular bassis (especialy when the BBC is in town).

but more likely they would use it against the club....
