Question about tooth Coral!

I have a tooth coral.. It is light red and looks like a brain.. He is right now tilted on a rock.. I was wondering dose he HAVE to be in the sand? Or do they like it in the sand?

A tooth coral could be a Galaxea species, Scolymia species, or a variety of other coral.
