Question for Roger -- external wavebox?

Roger,

I really love the wavebox concept but I want to have a clean looking in-wall tank. As a result, I'm looking at an external "overflow" box attached to the outside of my tank along the lines of the following:

(incidentally, I would like to attribute a fellow reefer in the UK who gave this a go but on a different length tank --> http://www.ultimatereef.net/forums/showthread.php?t=174493)

The tank I would like to have built will be 72"L x 30"W x 28"T with an external overflow centered on the back of the tank and 3/4" eurobraced (not shown in pic). I'm hoping to see roughly a 1-1.5" high wave based on what I've read.

My question is how far down along the side of the tank should I have the hole drilled in relation to the overflow? Or perhaps looking at it a second way, where should I place the water line mark on the wavebox in relation to the notch height for the overflow?

For example: If the back of the tank is notched down 2" for the overflow, placing the blue water line on the wavebox housing 1/4" below this notch mark would allow for the 1.5" clearance that a wave would generate. Would you recommend any additional clearance?

Here is the new external wave box.

Step one. Remove some of the outer rim around the tank.

Step two. Drill the hole.

Step three. Mound new glass wavebox.

So how's it working out for you, Hella, or may I say, how the Hella's it workin' out for you?

Did you drill your hole 70mm diameter?

Does it make much noise, as in, more than a standard wave box?

I used a 60mm hole and as far as noise .... hmmmm. I never had the box it comes with in the tank so I dont know how loud they are but I can say that I had to add sound damping rubber and foam around the box and it help alot.

I can turn the timer all the way up and get a double wave in in a 125. Its just a tad off and I wish I had just a bit more to turn it but it still looks great.

Thanks much for the response and the PM's.

I agree with Dudester, I just measured the pump face on my wavebox and it's right at 2-3/4" or 70mm. Sound isn't as much of a concern since my plans are for an in-wall tank and I'll have a dedicated fishroom behind the tank itself.

I've sent in my tank order so hopefully in a couple months I'll be able to revisit this with some results.

did you take the measurements from the plastic box and make a glass box?

The glass box is about a half in. larger all the way around then the plastic one.

I have not try on the 6 foot tank but i did 2 large ext wave box in my 8 foot x 4 foot tank. The result turn out very well.

My friend Chad working on his 6x3x2 with wave box and extension also ext.

For your tank size, you should get at least 1.5" wave. My ext box measure 10" long x 6" wide x 13" tall. Here is some picture...

Steve, why did you make your waveboxes so wide? I ask because the plastic box is only 4.4" wide, yet you went with 6"?

Is there two waveboxes in each side? 4 total? How far down did you drill the hole?

Mike, the box is 10"x6"x13. I made a bigger box to make sure the pumps don't run dry just in case i have to run longer pulse interval (each box house 2 pumps). I also make sure i have enough room to slide the pump in and out without any problem. I could get away with 9x5x13 but my overflow box is 24x6x13 which mean the overflow will stick out 1"....

Yes, two waveboxes on each side, 4 total. the hole approx 12" from the water surface

Any special considerations or problems with end mounted overflows like Jarhead has?

I am thinking of a tank with ozkrogh's dimentions and wavebox location, but with an end mounted overflow right beside it.

Steve, all you have to do is raise your durso pipe a little higher, making sure the water level inside your overflow is the same level with the bottom of the teeth. By doing that, you will avoid the down fall of the water inside the overflow box.

Hello, there is two waveboxes on each side and the hole is approx 10.5 inches from the surface to the center.
