Question for those of you with 180 or bigger tanks

Do you have a tank that is pushed up against a wall so that you don't have access to the back of the tank? I am starting up a 210 and am trying to figure out if I will regret not having it pulled off the wall a foot or two so I could get behind the tank to clean the back glass. Please let me know how your tank is set up and if you have any input on my situation.

I have a 180 against the wall. I let the back wall get covered in coraline. It is a bit tough reaching into the back of the tank but that is what I have long tweezers for.

Keep in mind that if you have access from the back, so does every one else.

If you put it against the wall and the wall is painted insure the paint is waterproof or at least washable. If not I will suggest painting the wall again before installing the tank.

My tank is reef ready. Thank you for all the replies so far. Do all of you have an equipment room next to your tank or do you just keep everything under the tank in the stand.

The 210 is in my office. Everything is in the stand. The 300 and the 90 run into a large 200+gal sump in the basement.

For those who put their equipment in the basement with the tank upstair, you have to drill holes in the floor for your PVC pipes right? Wouldn't this be a big issue when you relocate the tank or sale your house?

I want to have my sump & equipment in the basement too. But I am afraid it may cause problem selling the house.

Not really. Just redo the carpeting in the room and when you do, patch where the hole in the floor is.

Depending on location, i think you would be able to go down through the inside of a wall instead of the floor right?

If you have hard wood floors you can patch and repolish or even better, install a decorative floor electric plug wired from the basement that can be used to connect a lamp over a table replacing the tank in the same location.

I also have a 180 against the wall and a basement fish room. We drilled through to the basement behind the wall and used Flex to get it over to the fish room.

The only thing we should have to patch is a couple of areas for drywall! :D

It's nice to have the equipment away from the display!

My RR180 is 4" from the wall. My 90 gallon(18"x20"x60") sump (w/fuge)fits underneith the tank. I've had issues replumbing the tank only because all 4 holes in the OF boxes are drains. I have my return lines running up the wall, behind the tank, to the surge bins. Going from (2)1" lines to (2)1 1/2" lines was a pain. Other than my need to improve things, it's fine against the wall. Also, I don't have as fancy of filtration set-ups as most, so I don't need anymore room than whats under the stand. Good luck!:D

I suggest protecting the wall behind the tank by covering with something. HD/Menards sell sheets, almost like paneling, that can be painted (or left as white).

Depending on how long your tank is there, the dry wall starts to bubble and will need to be replaced. You can't sand it or repaint over the bubbles.

If you have hard wood floors you can patch and repolish or even better,

u can cut a square hole the same size as a vent register so when u move the tank u can pop it right in....much easier than fixing floors/drywall....

my 300gl has an 8" cavity in back for my 8' skimmer...also helps venting the base cabinet from heat due to pumps...
:smokin: ;)

My 8ft 240 is on my wall right now but i will be building it into the wall in the basement soon and will have a whole room behind it for access, (filter room) nothing will be in the stand anymore and no more worrying about lights in a canopy etc etc. i just want to be able to walk through a door and on the other side is basically my tank system.

I will also be doing some FW ponds in the basement when i do this project as well.
