Question on green edged echnos

I am having a really hard time finding a true Watermelon - but I did find a couple echnos that are very nice, I just don't know if they're worth it. I know, I know ... if its worth it to me, its worth it ... I'm just trying to get an idea of price.

I have someone willing to sell me two echnos for $60/each, they are both about 4" in diameter and have a killer green leading edge. One is pink and one is purple, but not that crazy red I see from Maximus' and RandyO's pix. They are fully healed, leading edge all the way around. One is actually more like a fluorescent yellow edge.

Are those frags hard to find? Is $60 a good price? They really are more like a small colony and not a frag.

He also has one for $100 but its about 6" in diameter and a buddy offered to split it with me. Are they hard to cut? I'm getting a Dremel, would I cut it from the underside or just go right over the top?

Any help/advice would be welcome. Thanks!

David

I love Echino's! What you described sounds nice. I'd probably buy them. So if you decide to pass point me to where I can get them.

If you want a true watermelon, tyree's / hugo's, I can help you find one or two pieces.

I don't know if what you've found is hard to find. Have you seen them before? If you pass on this deal, do you think you'll be able to find these again without much trouble.

As far as cutting it goes, usually if they're growing off the rock and its just a thin plate. Its easy. If they've encrusted over the rock its a little more difficult. I use a diamond dremel and its easy. Just use a goggles, maybe something to cover your mouth so you don't eat rock dust.

Thanks, I'm gonna buy them. Its not too much money so what the heck.

And YES, please drop me a note and LMK where I can get one. Are Tyrees/Hugo's the same piece? That hot pink is unreal in pix.

You need to post some pix after you get them. They sound amazing. Fragging is pretty simple if the base is relative thin. I just score the bottom and snap. I try not to cut into the tissue if at all possible. But if the piece is thick, you'll need to score all the way around and just use a flat head screwdriver and hammer to break in half. Yes, I have to say "flat head" b/c someone actually asked me if a phillips screwdrive was ok to use. Good luck. Looking forward to the pix.

Watermelons are fairly hard to find where I am, and the way echinos change with tank conditions they often look different in different tanks. I have bought "fake" watermelons that have really turned bright red/pink in my tank, and I have frags that are different colors in my frag tank versus my main tank. IMO, I attribute the beautiful colors of the tyree/sniper echinos to their optimal tank conditions, and echinos from other tanks may vary.

Well I ended up doing it and everything was fine. They look good this morning as well. I don't know that they're anything rare, but REALLY nice, the pink (not Watermelon pink) one has a green edge and yellow eyes, the other one has neon green eyes and edge. I have a solid hit pink - and the coolest thing is the contrast sitting next to each other. I think this is the mother colony of the green one -

(wrong thread, sorry :) )

Nice looking piece. That looks almost like Tubs Alien Eye, except the Alien Eye has a more purplish base. A beauty nonetheless. Now let's see pix of the pink one :D

I believe this is the mother colony of the other piece. I love them side by side. Next to them is the hot pink, now if only I could get that WATERMELON!!!

Whoa Kenny... I just got the exact same coral a few weeks ago. I asked for an ID on this forum, and believe it is a mycedium robokaki. Your picture is better than mine, but they are beautiful!!! Good luck, they grow like weeds. End of Highjack.
