question on maxi mods

for a 90 gallon tank, would it be too much flow to have one on each side but on a wave maker so only one side was on at a time? I'm thinking this is the way I want to go.

it depends what mods and maxis you want... basing this on what ive leanred from my maxi questions... haveing about three 1200's with MEDIUM mods should do just fine
:)

as of right now i've got a mixture of softies, lps, and an sps...i wanna get some more sps's though. the only one i have now is micromythelma...however u spell that. I want to get an orange cap..some birds nest...maybe a couple other things right now in my 55 i've go a maxijet 1200 on each side...and then a mag 9.5 as my return...I just hate it because theres spots in my tank that get incredible flow because theres the powerheads spray in pretty much one spot

have you thought to go with the hydor koralias. i have 2 number 1's in a 20 long and they do a good job. you would probaly go to the number 3 or 4 and they put out the wide flow pattern like the tunze but are alot cheaper. very happy with mine. get out marinedepot and i got mine from sitc

Hydor recommends against using on wavemaker...they are attempting to make a Hydor WM that never shuts the PH off, but instead rotates one at a very slow pace so when it starts it is already spinning the right way...

i found if you slow the speed down it does not make the noise that you are replying to craig. and in my opinion the mjmods are not built well. i have had several close friends have them lockup break and so on. just trying to get a cheap alternative out there

the reason i'm asking about the maximods is because i already have 2 maxijet 1200's so I would jsut have to buy the mod and build them.

my concern is that even though a 90 gallong tank is huge for me, it's still not that big. Just wondering if having them on a wavemaker so that only one is one at a time would be good flow or too much flow...thanks

I have a MJ modded with the high flow, a regular MJ1200, and another MJ 1200, two on the on-off cycle and one on the on-on-off-off cycle on my 55G and it does fine...I wouldn't see them creating a problem in a 90G...is it 48" or greater? If so, this should be a fine solution.

Also, nothing wrong with the Hydors, I meant no ill-meaning to them...the MJ's modded or not will do the same thing, as will all AC driven pumps, because they will start backwards half of the time...not anything that Hydor could do about it except have it start spinning the right way as soon as the pump "realizes" it is in the wrong direction, which they have(same reason the MJ mods need to have that piece of acrylic to stop the prop from running backwards.

Again, from everything I've heard, the Hydor Koralia is a very good PH and I've also heard that their customer support is beyond that of most companies...I've been thinking about investing in some myself. The only two downsides I've heard is the clicking upon start(and Hydor's recommendation not to run on wavemaker) and the size is on the large end(which is also true for modded MJ's).

craig...u talked about the maxi-mod starting backwards sometimes and someone else I talked to mentioned it.

is there anything bad about a maxi-mod starting backwards sometimes. I would imagine it would just suck water in instead of blowing it out???

Is it ok to put a maxi-mod on a wavemaker then?

Having used and currently have both the modded mj 120" and the koralia 3's I thnik the mj1200's are a very reliable ph and the modded version is not only huge but looks and probably is home crafted. The koralia has issues in regards to wave maker operation. click clak click but do seem to have a much wider outlet pattern as the water flow is actually being fed from the rear and is fanned out thru the much smaller and less obtrusive mj mod. So far I have yet to actually watch a koralia start and run backwards, but I'm thinking the the prop in reverse operation is far less efficient and uses more energy, not that the koralia is only 6.5 watts at 850 gph. and a non-modded mj 1200 uses 20w. Thinking the added load of a propeller vs a centrifigal style is impeller uses far more energy yet, not that I have tested it although that may be a thought. (hear me there skinnyjoe)
Hope this helps in anyway.
Regards
George
