Question

Don't ask me, I'm wrong.
I am setting up a new tank and was wondering if there is anyway to get the air out of the hose that goes down to the sump before it gets there, can I just drill a hole where the air is in the hose or will that just suck in more air? Any help would be appreciated thanks

I'm sure there are multiple ways to do this that apply to however you have your drain and sump set up. In my case, my sump is in the room behind my tank. When my drain lines come through the wall to go into the sump, I installed a "T" fitting on the PVC with one line going straight down into the sump water and the other side goes straight up and is capped with a small hole drilled in it to vent off the air that gets sucked down the durso. May not work exactly like that for your specific setup, but you can see the general idea. I had 90's on there originally, just to see what it would do, and had huge glorping bubbles in the sump. With the setup as above, I just get a little fizz.

Great that is kinda what I needed to know thank you! here is a pic of the hose line, the blue is the water level in the hose(roughly) would it be better to cut out for an extension at the green arrow so the water can go almost straight down or would it be better to cut it at the red arrow so that the air would go up?

Hard for me to say on that setup, I don't use that flexible stuff. I guess you could just give it your best shot and work with it.

Who do you use the wooden spoon on?

Can't say that I don't "like" it, as I've never used it before. ;) Closest I've come is a little of the spa-flex pvc on my setup. I just don't like to say do this or that when I've never had any experience with the stuff.

Should I put the end of the hose (where it comes into the sump) above water level, or should it be in the water. Right now it is about half way down the tank. I was told that might let alot of the air out before it gets in the water?

The flex hose it nicer than pipes to me, easier to set up, but I was at Justins house the other night and he has that really flexible pool hose and it seemed like it would work best, anyone know where to get it at with the ends.

You don't keep a wooden spoon near your tank??? How do you discipline your fish when they've been BADDDD:D

Flexible line would be handy on my return pump. It has to go a ways to get back through the wall and up to my returns. I have it on rigid PVC right now and found out once, while taking my sump out for some cleaning and revisions, that if I move my return line from the pump around too much, it caused my bulkhead to start leaking. That was rather unpleasant. :eek2:

Discipline my fish? They always just tell me what to do and I do it! Foxface comes up to the front and flexes his spines at me like, "You don't want none of this!", so I give him some nori.

I'll have to look into getting a spoon and taking back control.

I plumbed my return lines with the blue pool type hose and I bought it at Homer Depot. It works great I wish they had it in smaller sizes .

yeah I actually just bought some of it and set it all up with it, and it works much much better, but I guess I have it below the water line to far because I am getting a bad flushing effect.

Also one thing you have to watch out for with the small diameter hose is that it will collapse on you and not let the water flow.

I pulled the hose up to near the water surface and I still get the flushing effect? and I do unless it's out of the water. But I know I have seen tanks with the outlet under the water surface?

Yea, when I was having discipline issues I got the spoon, and it took care of most of the better than you attitude... But every once in a while I have to break out the car battery and stick some wires down in the tank. We call this timeout!
