i am moving into a townhouse where the living space is on the second floor over the the garage. How do i know if it is safe to put a 120 up there? Do you guys think i have anything to worry about?
Is there any way you can see the floor joists? Try and position it across several joists instead of parallel with them. Add support boards? Give your tank to me...
Bounce on the floor a bit, See if there is a lot of deflection in the floor. You can usually feel which way the joist are going by the way the floor bounces too.
there is only one way to find out,,,,lol. But are you willing to try it.It might get ugly if it does not work out. Personally like said above try to find out which way the joists run then place it going accross.
It's not uncommon that one end of the floor joist over a garage lay on a steel beam that spans across the center of the garage. Pretty hard to hide if there's a steel beam in there. If there is, you have a much better chance of being OK; especially if the tank lies at or near the beam and as Mevs point out spans multiple joist.
I agree with all of the above and would add that you should have a rider added to your renters insurance. Take it from the guy who was awakened at 3:00 by the fire department after a leak caused an electrical fire in the unit below me. :eek2:
