Before making the jump into a mixed reef my 55 gal. was a FOWLER which ended in a horrible tank crash. After waiting along time to start the reef (due to getting testing results back in order, and upgrading alot of items) there was nothing that survived not even coraline growth. My question is this..... before I have alot of purple coraline growth , but after the die off I am getting tons of red and just a little purple on everthing. Is the color of coraline specific to the type of rock you use?(I added alot of new rock to the old) And how can I get different color or is it going to be whatever is prodominate in the tank?

Usually the purple or the red will be the most prominent in the tank after a while, but what types you get is pretty random based on what comes in. I've noticed lately I'm getting some really cool looking pink/purple stuff that seems to be plating growth instead of encrusting, but most of it is purple in my system.

They are the best they have ever been now that I have added a stronger skimmer.... They are checking zero or near zero.

I read up on the different types of coraline at one point and time. What I learned was there are lots of different types including green, red, purple, etc. Each grows a different rate. Eventually one will probably take over but until then you will see different colors. I have found that the green coraline in my system grows much faster than the red or purple. My rock usually covers itself in the green first then the red/purples will grow back over the green.
