I purchased a Horse Conch because I liked it, and because I thought that it would mow down my algae. When I got it home I found out that it was a predator snail, and that it eats other Mollusks, and no algae.
The best thing for me about the Horse Conch was that my large (tennisball) size Hermit crabs were unable to eat it like they will do to my Turbo Snails if they find them.
It is said that the Horse Conch is able to retreat all the way back into it's shell, and close itself in with it's mantle for up to three months if need be. I know that it is true when my large Hermits tried to eat it. They could not get it.
Well I was hoping that if I was able to buy a large Queen Conch of at least 6" that it could withstand hermit crab onslaught, and also clean my glass free of algae. I thought that if I got a large enough one that my large Hermits would be unable to eat it. I do not know if this will hold true as I have not heard the pointed remark about the speciality that the Horse Conch possesses (able to retreat into it's shell for guaranteed safety.) So, if I am able to find a large Queen Conch (I assume I'll pay), but I do not want to buy a very large Queen Conch only to have it get eaten. My Hermits (the big guys) are dardanus Megistos. They will devour Turbo snails alive. The Horse conch was immune to them. He is in a different tank now where I can keep Turbos, and clams on hand for him, or else the big Hermits would eat all of his food, and it's not cheap. Well, any opinions might help me. Thanks. Do you think that a Large Queen Conch could prevent large Hermit crabs from eating it alive? My biggest crab got a hold of my Horse Conch. My Horse conch is 6". The crab tried all day to eat the snail, but had no success. That is what I am hoping for with the Queen Conch.
