I received a Watermelon frag a couple of weeks ago. I have noticed since putting it in the display some brown "stuff" coming off of the side where it was cut. I thought at first that it was just dead tissue but it is still doing it. I have some Lugols should I dip it? If so for how long and what ratio of Lugols to water. Thanks.

Have u checked your nitrate levels? If it is wild caught, anything over .5 ppm will cause it to RTN.

I'm assuming that this is an sps frag. parameters need to be checked.

It is a Challice which I believe is LPS. Parameters are:

SG = 1.025
Alk = 8.5 DKH
Calcium = 400
Temp = 79ish
No detectable Nitrate, Nitrite, Ammonia
PH = 8.1

I haven't had a brown jelly infection, but will try to offer some help. A lugols dip or iodine based dip may kill some of the bacteria in the area. Brown jelly is typically associated with water quality issues, so a water change may help improve the situation. Higher flow to the coral will remove some of the decaying material and stop the spread. If there is a large area of skeleton showing, you may want to cut it off to prevent algae spread. HTH

May have been a false alarm. I have never had water quality issues and all other corals / fish look fine. I just looked at the Watermelon frag with a large magnifying glass and I do not see any jelly or loose "skin". Perhaps it was just some dead flesh from when it was cut. I do appreciate all of the responses and I will keep an eye on it.
