Quick plumbing question - return hose size for Mag 7?

Im wrapping up my plumbing run at Home Depot.

The exit on the Mag 7 is 1/2 inch...

I have a hose thats 1/2 inch connecting to the Mag 7. From the Mag 7...the hose is connecting to different pieces of PVC and then to the 1 inch bulkhead...then back into the tank.

Is a 1/2 inch hose okay? I can do a 3/4 inch hose...but it would require me using a bronze barb adapter.

Thoughts? Is there too much pressure for 1/2 inch hose?

Thanks!!!

I used a 1/2" with my mag 7 with no problems. If your worried about it, just keep it 1" from your bulkhead.

What do you mean 1 inch from the bulkhead?

The hose isnt connecting to the bulkhead directly...the hose is connecting to some PVC fittings because the bulkhead is 1 inch big.

You will not get the full flow from a Mag 7 unless you increase the pipe to the recommended size, I believe it is 1-1/4 or 1-1/2". At 1/2" it will reduce the output and there is no worry of it blowing the piping out. If you still have the directions for the pump, look at the recommended plumbing sizes. 1/2" will work, but don't expect 700 gph. :-)

I always assumed that since the output was 1/2", then you get no benefit from upsizing beyond that, the water still has to get through that 1/2" outlet. I ran 1/2" all the way to the tank with my Mag 7.

Very good point that most people do not realize about the mag pumps. The recommended size for the return is 1.5" and their flow rates are calculated accordingly. Lowering the pipe size reduces the gph of the pump.

My exact thoughts...

How was the flow into the tank with the 1/2'' hose?

pumped out pretty good, of course I have no objective measurement, just can say that it ran a 75g very effectively, and was more than almost too much for the 37 gallon I had it on before.
