So i know all the good and bad about live rock but idk much about dry rock. Are there any down sides to dry rock? Ive read somewhere here that they leak phosphates, is that true?

Thanks

Why does it leak phosohates though?

Most dry rock (if bought retail, or wholesale) is terrestrially mined rock. It absorbs phosphate from the surrounding soil from decaying plant matter and other sources that wind up in the soil over time.

I would disagree that most dry rock will leach phosphates, but some does. It generally takes a few large water changes or running GFO to pull most of the phosphate out of the rock if it does contain phosphate.

If i add those small bags of carbon will it do?

Carbon will not remove phosphate, you need to use GFO or a phosphate absorbing resin. Some of the high end carbon mixes contain phosphate removing media, it it is usually a much more expensive alternative because they do not contain a lot of phosphate media.

You can soak your rocks in bleach, that will destroy all organic matter and decrease the chances of the rock leaching phosphate. After you soak it in bleach, I'd do like a 10:1 mixture of water to bleach, I'd let it sit in heated moving saltwater for two weeks. Treat the saltwater with prime on day two, change the salt water every few days, after two weeks all the phosphate should be gone.

Reef Cleaners rock is known for NOT leeching phosphates. xxmindgamesxx if you are worried about it...give reefcleaners a try.

Im guessing thats man made rock? And do you think live rocks from my lfs is a bad idea?

no its not a bad idea at all. if its dry rock tho... you should prep the rock like everyone is suggesting. its smart and will overall be healthier for your tank. but dry rock from your local store is fine, just prep it...
