Quick question to the SPS guru's

Does Seachem Reef Dip kill Red bugs?? If not I have a friend who's a vet and will write me a script for interceptor.

Yes and no....Reef dip will kill like 90% at high dosages, but corals really suffer at high dosages with reef dip....

Interceptor will kill 100% red bugs everytime with x2 x3 the reconmmended dosage, at minimal 5 hours.....at least in my experience...

You can't even overdose this interceptor in a q-tank....or as a dip...I've literally put 1/4 a tablet into less than 20 gllons...for several days with acros...never even them..except a green mille (everytime RTN the green mille)...but it was because very high extended dosages....

I recommend a 5-6 hour interceptor dip, of 2-3x recommended strenghth...quite safe!
Now just makes sure and soak and rinse frags etc. after dip before going into main tank....rinse em good....I've rinsed frags put in the main and still stunted the shrimp, emeralds, and hermits....this stuff is DEADLY to the crustaceans...

what do I need for a 38 gal QT. And my display needs to be void of acros for 5-7 days??

Yep no acros...not even the tiniest of pieces....
at least 5 days but I do 7-10...Doc is one to make sure the first time! NO CARBON.....at least for the first 5-6 hours...I never used carbon untill after like 4-5 days....carbons good to get most meds out of the water before frag rinsing...reduces meds sneaking into your main...learned the hard way here...sigh....lost a few (some died some lived)shrimp, emeralds, and hermits because I did not use carbon and rinse good before going back into main.....

I think recommended tank dosage is like 1 full pill per 380 gallons...I would use like a good 1/4 pill in a 38 bare Q-tank...some may say this is to high...but I say its a solid for sure kill.....

Agree with above, as the dosage of Iodine/reef dip to kill/stun red bugs is just about the dosage to kill corals. At least to stress them ... and figuring I've experienced no problems with Interceptor treatment [stories of coral loss seem quite rare with it], I by far prefer the Interceptor treatment [6 hours or so ... much longer, but my corals aren't so stressed coming out of it].

Heres a hypothetical question, lets say that you fell asleep at the wheel, and didnt dip or QT that last coral you added to the display tank and now red bugs are running rampant?

A. would you just dose the display tank with interceptor and replace your crustaceans afterwards.

B. would you remove all sps from the tank, treat them in QT.

C. try and add some predators that would eat the redbugs

D. do nothing

E. something else

A or B.

Given I have a spare 100g rubbermaid tub, extra MH, extra heater and powerheads ... I have a treatment tank just needing water [so would likely remove for treatment].

But when treating for red bugs I treated the whole tank the full 3 treatments [Dustin's instructions] and felt it was `worth it'.

If you're going to treat your whole tank, get the acro crabs out. Theyre rare enough as it is, and someone will be willing to take them. Most would even pay for them.

(some would even come over, fish them out for you, and then pay for them.)

We're just talking hypothetically, right? Ok, well, hypothetically speaking, if someone who happens to have a tank extremely similar to my own :) did exactly what you described, I would recommend that this hypothetical person does:

E. something else

which in this hypothetical case was:

1) For about a week before doing any dosing, grab every hermit or acro crab you see and move them into a small tank set up with a heater, powerhead and some of the live rock from the tank (don't even needs lights, really).

2) Do the recommended doses of Interceptor in the main tank

3) A week after the last dose, move the crabs and live rock back in

I... oops, I mean this hypothetical person... ended up with a decent pod population rebound after a couple weeks, since some hung out in the rocks in the crab tank, and some managed to survive the Interceptor treatment in the main tank.

My choice is B. Have enough spare parts to do it. Thanks for advice guys.

I would do A. No way I could rip em all out. But do what's best for you. Luckily I've never had red bugs and I hope I never do.
