Quick Question

breutus

Don't ask me, I'm wrong.
I am drilling out my little 7.5g to put a sump under it and was curious on the sizes.

I have a pump with a 3/4 in OD 1/2 in ID so it will be a 3/4 in hole for the return.

But I am wondering, can the hole for the outlet to the sump be 3/4 as well? Or does it have to be a whole step bigger? I am just trying to avoid putting something that big in my small tank.

small enough for adequate flow yet not to big to sound like a toilet running. clear as mud

I would go bigger for a return to the sump

so you think I should put the 1 in hole and use a 1 1/4 in durso in the tank? it's just gonna be so big... is there any other way around it? maybe restrict flow on the pump side

could you draw it up in MS paint and post the pic of what you are trying to do. 7.5 gallon tank is small...you mention durso are you going to make an overflow, 3/4 bulk head would be fine I would think to be conservative you would want as big as you could stand on the overflow.

by stating durso you are looking to create a siphon along with gravity to increase flow to the sump.

okay so this is quick but it might help, I am just wondering about the red i didn't know if i could get away with the same size as the return (blue) but if i can it means my durso could be smaller

ANy bigger and you can just take out the entire bottom!

If you make them the same size, cant you just use a smaller input line? Just use a threaded reducer bushing on hte input and take it to 3/4 and keep the return at 1"? How much flow are you going for?

well the pump I have is 300 gph at that head hieght so its probably more then i need it is just going to be softies and some LPS to start with

and thats wwhat i was thinking i had just always heard that you have to make the outlet bigger than the inlet... but a reducer on the inlet seems like it would work in my mind to... the problem is i am not all there anymore

(300 gph pump) a 3/4 in bulk head on the return to the sump you'll be fine with the 1 inch durso standpipe. even a 500 gph you'd be ok in my opinion

they say 1" on your overflow is good +/- 600gph on most designs
