I just bought a Quiet One 3000 to use as a return pump for my 75 gal. I didnt read about the problems that people have had with them until after I bought one, of course. So let me know what you think about them. The good, bad, and ugly!

I have used two different Quiet One 3000 pumps. Both have had problems with starting back up after a loss of electricity. The good..low price/good flow/energy efficient. The bad...not dependable to restart after power loss. My overall rating so-so. I will not be purchasing another, but sticking with mag drives instead.

I've used two 6ks and two 3ks.

For the most part they're quiet. Depending on how they're oriented they might not automatically restart after unplugging them.

My main thing with them is that they add quite a bit of heat to the tank even though I ran the 6ks externally.

What about a reeflo DART? You couldn't ask for a better pump. JMO!

I'll look into them, but I'm on a budget so I cant go too exspensive on a pump.

Wait sec though, a QO 6000 will start up if its the sump right, its only when it external they have problems starting, when there mounted in the sump my LFS told me it will start, now im worried.

Will the QO 6k start when its in the sump?

I have 3 Quiet one pumps as of right now, and I havent had a single problem with any of them. The 5000 was used for 3 years without even being cleaned and it works flawlessly.
I have heard of the newer versions having start up problems, but the old models I havent heard any problems with.
I runt he new version of the 6000 externally for a closed loop, and the 3000 internally for my return. They bothe run cool, quiet, and start back up every time.

I'll second the Reeflo Dart. This is the best pump that I have ever owned, but I am afrain that it would be too much for a 75 gallon tank. I know it puts out LOTS of flow in my 120.

I have a 3000 that I bought in June '05. It is submerged in my sump. It has a real problem with start up after power outage. It is super quiet, but I wouldn't order one again. I need something that will start up if I am not home and the power goes out. Just the other night we had a bad storm, power went out for a couple of minutes. I had to get out of bed at 4AM to check on it. Sure enough, it wasn't pumping. It isn't fun not being able to sleep at night because the power goes out and you know your tank may not be running.

My QO 4000 was in my sump for 7 months (never cleaned it) and it started everytime. I unplugged mine several times a week when I fed my fish and in fired up without fail.

I bought a QO 5000 2years ago for my 225 gal, Iv had lots of power outages power surges. the pump is in the sump no fiters or gaurds of any kind runs 24/7 without a hicup. For the price I would say its one of the best. I think i payed twice as much for my Iwaki 55. Mind you its a good pump too. Good luck with yours.
