Quietest Skimmer?

Change your thought to the pump that powers the skimmer. Skimmers themselves are virtually silent, you wouldnt hear it over most pumps that is. Lot's of threads here about which pumps are quiet. Lots of threads about skimmers for that matter but you wont likely find one that talks about it being quiet or noisy.

good point -- super skimmer is pretty quiet pump as long as the air silencer is working perfectly.

loudest skimmer I've tried was def remora pro with the pressure injection technology--basically like shooting a hose in a bucket and I had it in my bedroom. I was ready to sell it the first day

depends on what you consider noise to be... im used to my remora's hiss, but when i got a coralife superskimmer, i could not stand the machine grinding venturi of the pump itself..

really depends on you and how "willing" you are to deal with noise.

so far, the quietest skimmer i "hear" is the deltec hang on mce600 as the pump is totally sealed within the unit..

but in the end, there is no real quiet skimmer as they all involvemixing air and water together at high rates, which is not a quiet thing.

putting a skimmer in the stand underneath the tank (sump) will also help baffle the noise a bit - but all the above points are good as well

Wait till BK makes a mini with a Red Dragon pump on it ;) My BK is dead silent. I've endured some noisy skimmers over the years... Here ya are trying to enjoy the serenity of the ocean and either something injecting water or sucking up air takes the joy right out of it.

I don't have one but I thought besides the pump that the becket injectors are pretty loud. At least I hear people complaining about the noise the injector causes on here. Maybe someone can clear that up. Sorry didn't mean to hach-jack

Drew..

Beckett injectors can be silenced.

The BK is in all seriousness the quietest

I dunno they make a BK I would consider for a 46g tank. Not even the "minis" that are projected.

How quiet? The only dead silent skimmer I've ever heard is, as Moonpod mentions, a bubble king......but....

#1 - The deltec is a quality unit & the pump is enclosed

#2 - You can make a silencer for most needlewheel skimmers, then the pump becomes the issue. Those that use an Eheim will be quiet, those that use an pacific rim import pump will make more noise

#3 - You can quiet the air intake of a beckett....but...to be effective they need a pressure pump = noise (pressure pumps are high rpm & have fans the noise can't really be helped)

there is no quiet skimmer, its all about isolating the pump (which makes lots of noise) to an enclosed compartment (cabinet or within sealed plastic like deltec's mce600) for sound proofing....

other than that- welcome to the reef hobby!

Does BubbleKing make a hang-on?

Buble King cost $3498628946.99 dollars

I don't have any direct experience with Beckett skimmers so I cannot comment from experience on them, but for a tank your size, you should probably go with a needlewheel like an ASM or EuroReef. I have a G3 and the only noise I hear is the sucking sound from the venturi. I believe you can get mufflers for them... you might want to look into that.

Perhaps the higher quality needlewheels are quieter than an ASM (H&S, Deltec, BK), but I'd have a hard time dropping that much money on a skimmer for a small setup.
