Rainbow Monti question

I was wondering where people with rainbow monti's are placing theirs in the tank. I have a frag that is not doing so well. I got it and acclimated it in the bottom of the tank for 10 days and slowly moved it up. Well the edges of the base start to turn white from their blue color. So I assummed it was acclimated too quickly and moved it back down. Well, while in the lower position, the white discoloration got worse. Then I realized that this might not be bleaching as the polyps were missing from that area. It dawned on me that it might be a flow issue. So I moved it to a position with better flow in hopes it will be ok. Does this sound like the right move. It is under two 250 watt De phoenix 14k bulbs and four 110watt vhos. Any help is appreciated.

I have one that I was following that came in browned from a online co. I have a staged pic Ill show you. I have 250W moguls coralvue reflux with 50/50 actinics. I personally think each one is different. I got it to this stage and then I put it from the bottom to middle after 1 month and it browned out again. So now its back on the bottom and doing better. Who knows. Its up to the coral.

So they were taken one week at a time. It took one week for it to go back to pic one color being raised to half up. So now he will stay down.

Think that it was not placing problem. Monti is little bit strong one comparing with other sps. It goes so well in any place and any condition. So it seems to be another problem. If other sps in your tank has no problem and grow fast, it is because your monti is not healthy. And every sps in your tank grow very slow and have some problem, check your tank parameter.

Um, then its door number one. My other corals are fine. You be the judge.

Cool... If other corals are fine, it is the problem of rainbow itself. Who knows why it is sick. Just leave it and look, it can be OK in the near future.

If I told you what vendor you would understand. But im not going to say. As long as I can get it healthy then im happy. I also have another that a local reefer gave me as a rescue that he calls the unknown. BUt I really think its a rainbow. But since in my tank its polpys are more extended but the color is lacking. It was brwon originally. So I might move this one up in a couple of weeks. We shall see.

Alot of wild colonies I have seen look like the rainbow and superman when they come in, but after a few weeks or month, they tend to almost all turn brown. Not sure if they are collected in deeper water and cooler temperature, and when they are in our tanks the location and warmer temperature might be affecting the color.

Doc,
I just picked upa rainbow from fragglereef. It browned out a bit during shipping and dipping. The base is turn light purple and polyps are green and orange. I put it on the bottom of my tank under 400 radium hqi's and it started to bleach. I moved it under the 250w 12k bulb(much less par) in the center on my tank is its doing much better. Based on that I just don't think these corals like alot of light. Your DE bulbs put out a ton of par. I would leave it low for a good month and see how it looks

Wentreef,
Thats looks like the real deal to me!

Could be.

I picked up some wild "superman" pieces that were totally brown at the store. They got a decent amount of blue after less than a couple weeks in my tank, and the color is still changing.

Here's a pic after about 2 weeks.

I'm running the tank at 76 degrees to accomodate a a variety of Tonga sps. The non Tonga corals don't seem to mind. I have the "superman" at the very top of the tank under 2x250w XM 20k. The pieces that are shaded get very little blue.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will leave it on the bottom with plenty of flow. I'll see what happens. It has good polyp extension and the polyps are coloring up nicely. The base is just bleaching. My other sps look good. They just are growing slow. So I assume this is just a sick coral that I hope comes around. I did dip it when I got it, like I do all my new additions.

Mine is semi shaded from my SEIO and is under pretty much the same lighting setup as yours. It is at about midway up on the tank, but off center from the phoenix bulb. Also I have it in a semi moderate flow area too. It took about a month to start growing, but since it has adapted, its taking off.
