Raising Magnesium to treat Bryopsis

So I am currently facing the challenge of bryopsis... yay:spin3::headwally:

Anyways I was happy to read that a way to treat this is with magnesium. I have a magnesium test kit on the way and now I am going to order the Kent Tech M product. My question is how much should I order. The tank I am treating is a 20 gallons. Thanks!

Yay! Ugh. Lol

There is a good calculator you can use to determine how much of the Kent Tech M you need to add to raise your magnesium. It's recommended to raise no more than 100 ppm per day, up to 1800 total. It depends a bit on your current mg level though, how high you need to go. With the calculator you can see how much you'll need. Be sure to get enough to add for water changes if you plan to do those during the treatment.

Another option is to use kalk paste on the bryopsis. Tmz has used and recommended this approach, as the unknown contaminant in Kent is... Unknown. Heh. I used the Kent but had some issues since and am now using the kalk paste. It takes a bit more hands on approach but seems quite effective.

Good luck with your battle!

Thanks for the help, and I will give the talk paste a try after I try tech M. I actually have never tested for magnesium, and is possibly the reason why I am having troubles in the first place:uhoh3::facepalm:

I have a magnesium test kit coming in though so I will soon be able to monitor it. Do you have a link to the calculator?

I raised mine to around 1600 with tech m. ie for future ref.I understand it's not the high mag it's the tech m that gets rid of bryopsis. The impurities in it? My point is always use tech m to raise mag to get rid of bryopsis.it worked like a charm for me. One ml per gallon will raise mag18.3 ppm.I get off amazon for like 8 bucks 16 ml bottle or 25 for gallon.

FYI I needed to raise my magnesium to 2000ppm to kill off the bryopsis in my tank, although I know many have had success at 1800. I would purchase more than what the calculator determines you need so you can hold the high magnesium level for a couple of weeks if needed.

Don't forget a Salifert test kit to measure where your starting Mg is.

I would get the 64 oz size. If you get the 16 oz size it might not be enough and you'll have to buy more.

The 64 oz size should be plenty and it doesn't go bad so you can use the rest to maintenance dose.
