Raising Phyto & Rotifer Qustion...

Hi all breeders;

While Im culturing my phyto and rotifer for 2nd batch, I did extensive studies on the good World wide web. I stumber upon some problems that need answering, hope you guys can help out.

Phyto:
1. While it is easy to see that it is growing, but it crash at day 6 and pale to clear water in just 2 days. Many suggested spliting at day 7. But my phyto culture is not that dense when it crash, but then I bubble at a low rate, now I increase it to 20 BPS. Question is that should I add F2 media on day 7 if I want the phyto to thinken in concentration presuming the F2 media should be use by the phyto in day 7.
2. There is a layer of whitish scump in the bottom of the coke bottle, should I filter it out or is it all right to keep it there.

Rotifer:
1. I have problem knowing if the culture has crash. When it is bubbling, denitrus are suspended so I saw particles in the water column, once I off the bubble and let settle, on the lights, I dun see rotifer attracted to the lights, does it means it crash?
2. I get denitrus and gunk on the side and bottom of the 1.5l bottle. I presume they are to removed so I change the bottle every 2nd day, and rinse out. They are not rotifer by any chance right?
3. I keep a batch of gunk in my fridge hoping there is cryst in them that I can restart if I crash, is that true.
4. I'm using IA for now since I yet to get my phyto going, since IA is dead, how I know if the gunk at the bottom are from the dead phyto or waste from the rotifer.

Hope good samitarians can help.

Cheers.

stress=cysts so there should be some in that gunk.

If your rofiters are not consuming all the IA, you're feeding to much. Back off and feed when you see some color change.

Gunk on bottom is rotifer poo most likely with some algae flock as well. In a well running system, the ratio of poo to gunk should be mostly poo to some flock.

Rotifers do cling to things, so there could be some in there as well.

Sorry, no help on the phyto, I don't do any of that myself :)

For the phyto, experimentation is the key. You shouldnt have white stuff at the bottom of your culture vessel. As far as your culture crashing....... try something different. Some people add a little nutrient each day, add more, add less, use longer/shorter photo periods. Check your nutrient as well, I dont think there should be any "scump" at the bottom of the coke bottle.

I'm into the 5th day now, and it is getting mid green. whitish stuff I get it after the 2nd photo day.

I use 5ml Miracle Gro and 1 ml Seachem Marine Trace Elements, you think it is because of these combo?

Maybe. I dont use those. Ive had good results with an f/2 formula. The white stuff may be(I'm guessing) some type of precipitate due to pH changing due to density of phyto. Everybody has mixed results with methods and I would suggest this.... if what your trying isnt working, do something different.

nakazoru- Is this what you are using??

I even looked at that one. I guess it is one more trip to HD. O well. I guess I had it coming to me since I didn't ask which one to use. Nak- How long have you been doing this?

I using this for almost 7 x 2ltrs of phyto with 2 initial bottle crash...

Now I get it running already. A month plus in all.
