A dual stage controller will control the power to a chiller and a heater. The controller will not allow the two devices to be on at the same time.

Dual stage is definitely the better way to go, but they get pricey, even on E-bay. Most sell for around $80 - 100. If you buy one on E-bay, make sure you do not get one that operates on 24volts, as these are common also. And I will mention that new Ranco controllers come without any electrical cords and a non-saltwater safe temp. probe. You have to supply your own cords / wire them in and use a foot long peice of heat shrink tubing on the probe to make it saltwater safe. The probe itself is not toxic to your aquarium, it is just a bare probe and will quickly corrode when put in saltwater. The controllers are simple to wire up and come with half-way decent schematics. If you get one without the cords, I can walk you through putting one together.

One last thing, most chillers that have an internal temp controller such as an Arctica, don't like to have their power manipulated from an outside source. These are fairly reliable already. My Arctica has a 3 digit temp display that reads down to a tenth of a degree. I still use a Ranco to control the heater and another to turn off the MH if temp goes beyond 83. This is a little off topic now isn't it?

If you want to control both the fans and the heater you will need a dual. They can be bought a few places and I'm not sure if this is a good deal or not but it comes with everything you need at a fair price-

try here

Of course if you are thinking about spending that much you can spend a little more (about 100 more) and get something like the Aquacontroller Jr which comes with a DC8 and you can use it to control lights and other things as well.

Richard, would yours for sale work (and doesn't need any major mods) for heater and fan? In flagstaff, I don't need a 2 stage for chiller, but fan would definitely be a nice addition.

The medusa is a dual stage will operate fans/chiller and a heater. It is 1 year old it was replaced with the Reefkeeper II. I never had any problems with it. PM for more information Doglover
