Has anyone ever tried to control nuisence algae in a reef tank using freshwater live bearers such as guppies or mollies? Not that they make good permenent saltwater fish but to use them as a "fun" alternative instead of the usual snails and crabs. I know i am probobly going to **** a lot of saltwater purists of but like i said its just a random thought. Let me know what you know.

Yes people do that. In the early stage of my tank I would have but none were available.

You can find a lot of stories of people using mollies. I've acclimated some to SW before. They did alright though they looked out of place and are ugly IMHO. They seemed to swim "funny" in SW too. Funnier than usual.

Also, would they bother soft corals, mushrooms or xenia?

I have seen people using tropheus cichlids, which are great hair algae eaters. But acclimating cichlids from African rift lakes to saltwater is not as straight forward.

I don't know if guppies cab be or not.. I. Super interested though because my girlfriend gave me her daughter's freshwater tank recently.. full of lil guppies..

They can be converted. They a brackish water fish. Bit male guppies do not do very well in strong current.

How do I convert them? Just start topping off there lil 10 gallon tank with saltwater?

I have a relatively low flow tank... so they should be ok...

Yeah. You can probably bring them into full saltwater in about 1 week.
