RAW editor

Anyone know of a good RAW editor that is cheap or free? Right now I am using ViewNX for Nikon, it's ok but not the greatest. I am having trouble getting the white balance where it should be for colors under LED actinic lighting.

I also did some more digging and found that a lot of people really like Lightroom. I will probably go for that after the holidays. My only real problem with the Nikon program is that when doing the white balance, instead of using a white reference point, there is an option to use a grey reference point? So does that mean I need to put something grey in the tank to set the white balance? Anyone familiar with grey points?
