re-entering the hobby...personally AND professionally!

Hello (again) Reef Central!!

I had been lurking around these parts on and off for the last 3 or 4 months, debating on re-entering this wonderful, wallet-draining hobby. A few years ago I was heavy into reefing, and had a 46gal bow with zoas, anenomes, LPS, shrooms and enjoyed some decent success keeping the tank. I switched back to freshwater around a previous move. I decided to do some FW planted tanks, and am now enjoying some success with that. Well, long story short, I left a terrible office job and began searching for some hobby/interest related work. I was browsing this list my friend Craig maintains, and found a post looking for an aquarium maintenance tech. It mentioned SW/reef knowledge as a must. I sent them a friendly email detailing my aquarium knowledge and history, and also mentioned that I currently do not have a reef tank.

Anyway......I WAS HIRED! :D

I am in the shop mostly, but also perform service visits to clients homes and businesses. I have been geeking out super hard over everything at the store, although the first few days were slightly overwhelming. I've been lurking here on RC nearly every night after work, just drooling over everyones neat setups and soaking up every last ounce of knowledge and information I can. The store carries exclusively saltwater/reef. Lots O' softies and LPS', zoas and mushrooms out the ears, and even a some SPS frags and exotic zoas. We sell all the fun brands too; Aqeuon, Brightwell, Radion, Reef Octo, Eshopps, Vortex, Rods Food, Newlife Spect, Salifert, etc etc.

SOOOOO, what are my tank plans you ask????

Unfortunately, nothing until I move :mad2: I need to get my commute a lil' bit shorter, and my rent a lil' bit cheaper. But that should be at most two months.

Right now I have two in mind. I would like to get a 14g Biocube setup as a very quiet/peaceful reef with lots of zoas and maybe an LPS or two. For fish I think a goby/shrimp pair and maybe one or two peaceful. I hope to use an existing 20H I have to run a fuge/sump. I'm still brainstorming and cruising around here for ideas on how to do that best... My "big tank" will most likely be a 93gal rimless (30x30x24) :inlove: that will be a total mixed reef, with a concentration on zoas/mushrooms and probably only a SPS or two in time. Fish wise I only know two for sure; a dozen or so chromis and some sort of rabbitfish. I'm not fond of overstocked tanks (my 20g planted has 5 neons and two cories). Anyway, I have always drooled over rimless tanks and really can't wait to set it up. I have the guts to an existing 150w halide halide/ballast, and hope to DIY a hood using that and a few little 50/50 LED strips to extend the lighting period. I think it would be really sweet looking to have the light off-center near the back, hopefully create a nice dramatic effect and make the tank possibly look even deeper than it already is. Also, that will give me good options for placement with my higher or lower light demands in corals. I'll probably use an Eshopps skimmer as of now, I heard they are good bang for the buck (yeah?). Speaking of which, most of this will be extreme low budget/on the cheap. Yes, I will be getting urrything for employee price (oops, did I just make your blood boil? ;) ), however let's keep in mind I'm now living off of pet store money.......

well I guess that's about enough ranting for now, I just wanted to say hi and that I am so insanely thrilled to have my life revolve around aquariums and reef tanks again. I'll be lurking and lurking soaking up info, but I've already seen so many wonderful setups that I will soon be chipping in on.

oh yeah, and I'll be having a build thread or two in the future

PS

Since I know it will be asked, the store is Chicago Fish & Coral in Orland Park, IL. For anyone that has been there... Hi! I'm the new guy (promise I'm not just trying to get a plug in)

Sounds like good times ahead! Not sure if 150w halide will cut it. That a long tank for only 1x150w. The outer 10" or so will be pretty dark on both sides depending on hang height you might be able to hit the full 30" tank with 1 halide but your PAR will be really low.

Yeah, I am concerned it wont be adequate, but the parts for the 150W are in a box collecting dust in the closet, so I just really want to try it out. If it doesn't work, it won't have been a costly project.

I'm in your area and frequent that store quite often. Usually for ro di and to browse. Personally I would buy more coral if the prices were more competitive as it is close to home. No way to justify double prices though.

You guys have tail spot goby yet?:spin2:
