Recommendation on pocket camera

I know this is the opposite of what everyone normally is looking for, but I have 0 knowledge on this topic and can use some help.
I am looking for a small camera for everyday use, nothing fancy. Something I can put in my pocket or backpack. I am replacing my broken Canon Power Shot A610, which was a little to big. I would like something that is good for taking action shots. Thanks for any help.

My Nikon coolpix L20 is producing web quality shots nicely for me. It doesn't seem to take the best shots above the water but has excellent feedback from underwater photographers. I use an Ikelite case 6280.21 with it and can take macros underwater from 2" away. It also took nice pics before I got the case shooting through the glass or a viewing box. I also got my girlfriend an inexpensive Fuji submersible that takes nearly as good pics and performs much better on dry land. After rereading your post, the Fuji may be your better option of the two.
Sorry, RC doesn't allow me to link to the photography.

Thanks for the feedback. That Canon is nice, but a little pricey. I'm looking to spend around $200. The camera will be subject to abuse so I don't want to spend to much.

You can't beat the powershot series for size and performance.

I'd recommend sd1400 or sd780(which is what I have) I carry it in my pocket all the time.

That's a nice camera also. I like the 1400 with the fish eye effect. A lot of complaints that the pictures are not sharp enough and just plain blurry. Other complaints of a "lens error" problem a lot of people are having.

How are your pictures sharpness? I know I have to take the reviews like a grain of salt. I'm sure dumb people are comparing a dslr quality to a pocket camera.

I use the camera for every day shooting in all settings. I also use the HD video a lot. 95% of the time, I leave the camera in auto mode and get great shots, I get jealous because the camera can take better shots than I can. Some times the camera doesn't want focus on the right subject (more often for close range) and I have to put it manual to get what I was looking for. If the pics come out blurry it is operator error. I take with me everywhere I go and take tons of pictures, I have never had an error. I do keep it in a soft case ($5 @ walmart) to keep it clean, that might have something to do with the lack of problems. Keep your eyes open for deals, I bought mine refurbished from amazon for $135.
