recycling water change water

Can water taken durring a water change be placed into algae filled containors to repurify it?

I ask because i have an empty window pane which can fit 57 water bottles (so far i have collected 32) and a nice supply of chaeto. If i sacrificed a little chateo and ulva to the bottles how long would it need to stay in the bottle with a starting nitrate of 10? I would plan on cycling the bottles three or four daily, this would give each bottle 19-14 days to filter out all the gunk in the water and grow some pods.

my other question is would i need aeration? does algae suffer from hypoxic conditions? or would capping it after blowing co2 into it even be a good idea?

thanks guys.

the main reason i want to do this is because i want to breed copepods, not en mas' because i will soon have direct access to fresh plankton, but cheaply and easily.

maybe buy the cheap salt in home depot for your cultures and skip reusing the water.

You may be able to clean the nitrate from the water but you will still need to replenish the trace elements with addatives. Cheaper to just make new water.

I feel i may have not been clear.

I will need to use water to breed benthic copepods anyway. wheather i am using new salt water or old tank water. what i am wondering is if I would need to sieve the water before adding copepods into tank, or if i could add the culture water, which will be cleaned by the algae.

i already add trace elements so...no extra cost their.

I would remove and clean the pods from the culture water before adding them to my display. I think you will need to sterilize your old tank water before starting any cultures as well to avoid introducing something you don't want into your culture.

Then again you could just add some fertilizer to your old tank water and add a light and have some good green water for your culture.

What type of pods are you culturing if you don't mind me asking?

Harps sp.

eventualy i will be breeding A. Tonsa as per luise's instructions on mofib.

I think it is a fine way to breed copepods, but I would not reuse the water in a reef aquarium. You may remove nitrate and phosphate, but will probably add back organic matter and may not help (might even make worse) the water in other ways.

Yes, you may need aeration to allow the macroalgae to grow as it needs a good supply of CO2.
