ok i went away for ten days i came home to alot of red algae and my damsel killed three of my fish so he will be going down the toilet unless someone wants him how do i get rid of the algae and why is it so bad

no my b/f was taking care of my tank an when he saw them he took them outhe watch the damsel kill my clown and the other to where alive one night when he said and dead the next morning so he took them out they where only in the tank for a few hours

I had the same problem after my tank was set up for about 2-3 months. The only thing that I found that worked was "Red Slime Remover" by Ultra Life Reef Products. You can get it at Pet Depot in the Town Square Mall. Good Luck.

limiting nutrients threw some form of nutrient export(ex. water changes, protein skimming, carbon dosing) will rid you of your problem. but if you are looking to rid the tank by chemical means. you can also used maracyn (erythomycin (active ingredient in red slime remover)) intended fresh water, at a dosage of 200 mg/50 gal. this will only be a temporary fix until the nutrient levels are lowered**CAUTION** DO NOT USE maracyn intended for salt water. salt water maracyn contains other chemicals. fresh water maracyn contains just e.m.

ok i bought adams 20gl tank set it up checked my levels for a week nothing is out of place slowed down on feed and how much i feed went out and got more snails and the red slimeis back please and help from all of you is better then the pet stores thanks all

It may only be me but every tank I ever set up went through a red slime phase after a few weeks. I used erythomycin to keep things in check while adjusting feeding habits and letting the tank go through its phases. My experience is that it takes a good 6-8 months for a set up to stabilize. I have experienced this even when using rock and sand from one tank to start another.

Lower you nutrient level and see if the red slime starts to decrease. Don't expect things to change over night. You could also try doing larger water changes or doing them more often or adjusting you lighting.

thanks for your help adam just said the samething i put one of my snails on the red slime last night and he started to eat it hope he keeps eating it all i am going to give it a couple more months if it doesnt go away then i may use chemicals does anyone know if it will hurt the tank if i pick out the big pieces that are just hanging on the rocks

Something I do to help with algae is to run the tank for a day or 2 on night mode. Since RSA is photosynthetic this is a great "natural" way of controlling it. Hey, even the tropics have cloudy days so it won't harm the inhabitants.

another thing I have seen many people suggest besides limiting nutrients is to increase flow in your tank thus decreasing areas of "dead spots"

To be honest...the best thing I have found for controlling it is making sure the nutrients are occupied by something else...like another form of algae. Do you have a sump or some place you can put some algae?

yes i have a sump all i have in there is sand and a live rock i had someone say they would give me some stuff to go in the sump but they never came through
