red algea

i cant imagine this question hasnt been here asked before but oh well. i have a newer (four months old) tank that i have been slowly adding coral to. everything is doing great thanks to all the folks here and the frags ive been able to get.

a couple of weeks ago i got a couple of bird's nest frags, both of which were doing well. but over the last week some red algea has crept up the base of one of the frags and is clearly killing the polyps there. i am so proud of doing everything well up till now i would hate to loose one of my first two pieces of sps.

here is something that may have contributed to the problem. over the last few days i have noticed my tank looking a bit less colorful and just a bit cloudy. yesterday i saw that my palys were straining toward the top of the tank, something that i guessed was a light issue. sure enough the glass that i have used on the tank was clouded up big time with salt deposits and really keeping a bunch of light out of the tank. i immediately removed it and at this point have no reason to put it back, even after cleaning.

i guess my questions are, what do i need to do to help my sps? should i scrape the algea from the base of it? and now that the light is at full power again (225 watts of who for 29 gallon) will the situation get better on its own?

thanks again for the advice all. and also, is anyone has some small frag of frogspawn i would love to have a look at it.

happy thanksgiving.

i have plenty of flow, actually. two power heads and a return from the skimmer. the coudyness was more from the lights being blocked by the clouded glass top.

i have the same exact problem, my birdsnest has some fuzzy red algae on its base. it doesnt seem to be killing it or growing too much. i got the coral from someone on here with the algea already on it and i figrued my crabs would eat it but not really. im also curious that i could find something to eat it. as for frogspawn, i have a bunch of it with the neon green and purple tips. let me know if youd like to stop by and grab a frag! i think ill be heading to the swap on the 10th downtown so if im too far south (111th and kedzie) then you can get one from me there. thanks!

hey basile - the coral is just turning white from the bottom up. only the only piece though. i took it out and scraped off the algea and will keep an eye on it.

man, if i could get a piece of that frogspawn that would be great. i will be heading down to homewood over the week probably and could maybe stop by to get it from you. ill pm you when i have a better idea of when ill be headed out that way.

thanks again.
