RED BUGS..INTERCETOR QT or DISPLAY TREATMENT??

DID I SOUNDS SMRT??
Hey guys,

I have the stuff available to do a the Eric Boreman QT method of interceptor but it would be more work. Or should I use the original Dustin method and treat the display. I could always QT my snails and cleaner shrimp.....or do these survive the dustin method and 1x dose. Any advice and experiences would help......thanks.

I'd say do the qt method, that way you don't lose the pods and other things in your main tank, and can treat the problem at its source

I agree, QT. No tests have been done on Interceptor and fauna, pods, etc, etc. That being said, many, many people have treated the whole tank with out problems. Me personally?? I paid a lot of money for good live rock with good bio diversity, and I have worked hard to keep those animals alive. A little (or a lot!) extra work is worth it IMO.

Red bugs have been known to live in systems for awhile. It has become known to the local club that when you just treat in a QT and have had them in your display they will come back. All of the local club members whom have had LRBs treat the whole system. I know a few people only did two treatments and then a month latter had a infestation again. So I would treat the whole tank.

Well....back and forth. Now what. Will not some pods live in the display if I treat and will they not repopulate the tank.

So who has had luck treating in the display?? or who has had luck treating in a QT??

Also people who have treated the display what were the casualities if any?? Are my snails and cleaner shrimp fine??

If you treat in a QT, leave the corals there for 3 weeks or more to ensure that the red bugs that are still in the display die due to lack of a host.

If you treat the display, remove any crabs and shrimp. Snails will be unaffected. It will hurt your pod population but not wipe it out.

Do not return your crabs and shrimp to the display until you've done a ~40% water change.

thanks.....If I remove the shrimp and crabs.....do I do more then 1x dose?? and do I leave in longer then the Dustin original time of 6 hrs??

I treated my entire system. I did see my pod population drop off but over time they repopulated. I only lost my acro crabs. I even had an emerald crab live through all three treatments. Snails, cucumber, clams and all corals were fine.

Dose as instructed. After 6 hours, perform a WC and add tons of carbon. The next day, repeat the treatment along with the subsequent WC and addition carbon. After the carbon has some time to work it's magic, it's safe to re-introduce the shrimp and crabs. Remove them again a week later if/when you do the final treatment.

IMHO treating the whole tank following Dustins method to a T(prescribed dose, waiting in between treatments etc..) is the ONLY way to go. The only deviation I would make from that would be to slightly overdose.....~ 10%. People who have treated 3 times and followed the directions have a virtually 100% success rate.

Other methods, treating one time, taking everything out and dipping with iodine etc.... are hit and miss at best with a much higher failure rate than succes rate from what I have read on this forum:)
