red coris wrasse

I have recently purchaced a red coris wrasse last week and he is doing good. i just took him directly out of the box from my LFS's shippment. The wrasse only comes out when my dim lights are on only in the evening for about an hour to eat then he just goes back in. Is this normal? or is the red coris wrasse suposed to be out during the day like the other species of wrasse i have seen in aquariums?
 
How long have you had him? This may get a better response in the "Reef Fishes" or "Fish Only" subforums.

Hmmmm... every Wrasse I have ever had has been a PITA, except the 6 line. What kind of Wrasse is it? I am not familiar with a red wrasse. Is it a Juv Clown Coris? I have had at least 4 different specimens from the Wrasse family and they are bossy, agressive, grow quite large, and very difficult to extricate from your rockwork . If it is a Juv. Clown Coris he will need a sandy bottom to hide in. Only my opinion and my observation.
 
yeah it is called a clown coris as a juv. but he is a adult red coris and i bought him as an adult hes about 4 inches long i had him for a week now and shows no signs of agression yet.
 
my yellow coris was very shy when I got him. He hid in the rocks for a couple of days and darted into the sand when a moth flew by and farted. Now he's always out, very bold and shows no fear.

Oh, no aggression either
 
The yellow coris wrasse isnt an actual coris, its more closely related to melanurs wrasse and others in the Halichoeres genus. As for the red coris, they will take out inverts and become much more aggressive as they get older; so be careful what you keep with it.
 
I've had a red corris wrasse for a couple of years. It was very shy for the first couple of months, but is constantly out now. Every once in a while it will stay buried in the sand for up to a week. As stated earlier, they become quite aggressive as they mature. Mine is 5-6 inches and is a holy terror. If I could catch it, it would be gone.
 
i do have a cleaner shrimp and 2 peppermint shrimp in there with him now among other fish n corals but i try to keep him well fed and offer a variety of foods so far he has not attempted to eat one and he has been around all 3. and how aggressive can they get if the wrasse knows all his tank mates wontt they just get along?
 
I've had many red coris wrasse's...They take about 2 weeks to completely acclimate to the aquarium, they will hide for most of the day during this time, as long as he's eating he'll be okay..after a while you'll see him come out more and more. He's 50/50 with reef, once he's acclimated he'll probably start picking off small hermits, They can attack shrimp if they get hungry. But for the most part they're awesome docile wrasse. Harder to keep though
 
he comes out once a day now at the same time for the past week. when i have my dim lights on in the evening hes out then back in shortly after there off. and i have a coral beauty angel that i hate everything i put in the tank he goes after and he still continues to pick on the wrasse. this week i am buying a yellow belly regal tang to teach him some mannors. he is the only fish that i have that goes in the reef, he took the whole thing over. i use to have a couple of tangs but they died of old age a while ago. if i add some reef fish will the angel become less aggressive and allow everyone including the wrasse to swim where he pleases?
 
Just got rid of a Lunare Wrasse the easy way.
Rod's food and carpet surf. Scooped him up and brought him to LFS.

I had him for a few years in my 120. Got to be around 7".
Surprisingly, he never bothered my inverts.

However he made a mess when hitting food at the surface of tank
splashing walls, bulbs, carpet, etc.

I figured he would be impossible to get out of the tank.

I would not get another one. Too messy.

My juvi was out as soon as the lights came on. He was so annoying though always pushing frags around the sand looking for pods.
 
I had to glue a couple candy cane frags to larger pieces of rubble and then bury the rubble so only the frag was out of the substrate. He hasn't turned one of them over since. :)

He always is up in the morning before me, but I'm sleeping in till about 11-12 these days. :lol:

but I'm always up later than he is.
 
mine is awesome so far. I've seen him nail a few smaller hermits, but he leaves my shrimp and fish alone. He is not shy at all, he's out all day as soon as the lights come on. Make sure ALL of your corals are glued down WELL. mine flips anything that is not nailed down, and they are stronger than they look.
 
Mine is abotu 4" long and flips over rocks that probably weigh 15 times what he does. It's going to be rough to keep up with him when he gets full grown.

on what Engloid says

once that fish gets full grown, nothing is staying where you want it. he'll dig all your rocks out searching for food flip over any coral or frag on the sand. they can get pretty annoying. but they are beautiful fish..
