Red Eared Sliders need good home

I have two red-eared sliders I got in FL a couple of years ago. They were very small when I got them, and the store we got them at said they wouldn't get much bigger. Boy, what a lie! And I didn't know any better.

I love these turtles, but I don't have a big enough tank for them now--or place to put one even if I did--(I have 2 saltwater tanks). They are pretty large, and I want them to go where they can have a large tank or pond setup where they can swim and be happy.

check with AC. They might can find you a good home for them. I love RES. But like you said, they just get too big. I think I read a female RES needs at least a 125 gal tank.

Last I heard is they are illegal to sale in TN but nothin' about havin' one as pets right? I mean, all the pet stores around here sales RES food, box turtle food, and some sale turtle tanks.

But, what the law doesn't know doesn't matter :lol:

Not too long ago, a woman in Nashville had her African Spur Thigh tortoise break out of her back yard. Someone found it and took it the Nashville zoo I think. They returned the tortoise to her. So, I guess turtles/tortoises are ok to have as a pet.

Yeah,
I know they are illegal to sell in TN--of course, I am not trying to sell--just want to give them a good home--for free, of course. I called the Nashville Zoo, but they couldn't take them. I tried turtlehomes.org--as recommended by the Zoo guy, but never got a response from them. I just thought some turtle lover on here may want them or know someone who does.

Technally any reptile in the order of "chelonia"(all turtles, tortoises & terripans) is illegal to own, posess, barter, or sell with out proper the proper permits. Permits are only available for specific "institutions" for scientific, food, or educational purposes. T.C.A. # 1200.14.01.35

I didn't know that. But I have them, now, and I just wanted to place them in a good home. I don't want to just drop them off in some creek or something to fend for themselves. I hope the turtle police don't find out.

Wayne, one of them is as big as my hand--and the other is even bigger than that--7 or 8 inches, I'd say.

I found out when my daughter decided that she wanted one. I was told that they can live up to 50 years + with the proper care.

How big of a tank are they in now? I have a chipped (up high) 55 I was saving for a future turlte or frog habitat one day if they wouldn'y outgrow that real soon I may be able to take them. I have room for a 6' tank where it will sit just don't have a tank for them yet but you run across cheap 125's from time to time. Call me in the morning and we can talk more about them 557-575eight.

I did a little reading up on them and they are real cute! I have the space to set up a nice home for them in our bonus room and think the girls would love them. I have everything laying around that they would need to get them going I think. Call me for sure if you haven't gave them away yet.

I just now saw this (11:15 p.m.) Tuesday, so it's too late to call, but I will definitely call you tommorrow!
Just know that they do carry salmonella ( I think that is why they can't be sold in TN), so if the girls play with them, they have to wash up really, really well.
I'm gonna miss them, but they need a much bigger tank. Thank you so much, Angela!

Yea, I was aware of the salmonella from when I had turtels when I was a kid. I don't think they will be played with much because if you get them out once the girls will beg to get them out all the time. Done that before by letting them touch the tiny astrea stars and now every time they see one on the glass they want me to get it out for them and put it in a container to carry around!

I wish my 2nd floor could support my current 270 for them as a FW habitat. I am just very sad I have to sell it off since dad made the stand/canopy for me . But I am sure he can make me a more suitable set up for thease guys also.

check out turtleforum.com You have to register to view the forums I believe but some good info there and photos to help with ideas. Some people has made a box that sits over less than half of the tank top for basking (like a canopy sort of), leaving the entire tank for swimming. Pretty cool stuff.
