Red goopy algae in live sand

Sounds like Cyanobacteria

Not worth your hassle to buy CUC for Cyano. They won't wipe it out, only nibble a little and not your solution.

You have some issues with your water nutrients and probably not cycled.

You can siphon some of it off, use Red Slime Remover product, but ultimately ... Improve your water, do water changes and wait it out. It is the ugliest!

Yeah, probably not cycled through yet. Have been using RO / DI for the last 2 weeks. Just did a 25% change this past weekend.

You can try Red Slime remover.

It works! Temporary clean-up, but it might get you through a couple ugly months. You'll see it come back after 3-4 weeks

As is true with most algae, reduce nutrients to kill it.

Reduce/Remove phosphates/nitrates

Via:
Macro Algae / Turf Filter in refugium
Skimmer as big as you can afford / fit
DI water for top off and water changes
Perform regular Water Changes
Phosphate Sponge of some sort
Carbon
Water flow via power heads etc. to remove dead zones
Oh ya a good clean up crew does not hurt either

Here is a cool article on Turf filters:

I have posted this in three threads tonight. Maybe there is a better way by referemcing other threads?

Macro Algae is on the way. Refugium being built this week. New skimmer coming with sump.
RO / DI water being used for just over 2 weeks. 25% water change last weekend.
Phosphate media in canister which will be removed once sump gets here.
CUC = 10 red, 50 blue legged hermits, 75 cerith, and 50 nas snails.

Let's see, did I miss anything? ;)

I got all the snails that can turn over on their own. Snails are most vulnerable when they can't turn over which Turbo and Astrea can't do.

I used red slime remover, works really good, The only bad thing is shuttiing your protein skimmer for a couple of days may increase your nitrates a little bit.

your CUC sounds huge to me. 3 days lights out also gets rid of cyano and some actually recommend it once a month, its basically the same thing as a storm going over the water (happens often). I like the idea of that much more than adding chemicals to my tank..

on the 4th day only use your actinics so your corals can adjust again.. if you dont have actinics just ease back into your regular lighting schedule with half as much time with the lights on or so as you normally do.

good luck:)

I have actinics. Sounds like a good tip. There are quite a few people though recommending the red slime remover stuff. I don't like adding chemicals either.

I thought my CUC sounded big too, but I explained it over and over to the person that I bought the hermits and ceriths from.

Who knows!!

I hate the idea of adding any chemical that dont belong in my reef. some times its trading one problem for another. The best way is to water change regularly, stabilize your water perams, and reduce and keep consistent light schedule
