Red light VS white light

I was looking at a thread and it said to use a red light instead of white to see your tank at night. What is the difference between the two colors? Would it even matter if I used a white light?

Red light won't spook sneaky tank pest and livestock as much, so u can look better at what's going on-

Ok that's what I thought but I just wanted to make sure because withy luck I would give my fish a seizure.::
